Finally, a Blackhawk
Way back when, my late father taught me to shoot his Ruger Blackhawk revolver. It was the first handgun I ever fired. When he died several years ago, my step-mother told me to take the weapon, but I suggested she keep it, just in case. She waved a finger in my face and said, "All right, but you make damn sure you get it when I die!" I said I would, though I insisted we not discuss her demise. I gave her some ammo for the gun, and thought no more about it.
When she died earlier this year, I made contact with one of her daughters. She said that her sister was in charge of the estate, and passed my contact info on to her. Long story short, the revolver had mysteriously disappeared. Nobody would tell me whether the Ruger had been found, or if my step-mother had sold it to pay bills or whatever.... just a runaround. I really hope she did sell it, and put the money to good use. I prefer that scenario to some idiot pilfering it out of her belongings after her death.
Since that time, I have kept an eye out for another Blackhawk. Yesterday, a friend of mine who knew about the story traded me a brand new, unfired 2009-manufacture Blackhawk:
He really gave me an excellent deal, and I am in his debt. My brother, my fiancee, my daughter, and my step-son ran a box of Winchester Silvertips through it this weekend, along with a box of Remington .38 special ammo.
I don't kid myself that this one can come close to my old man's gun, but it's right at home with me. I had forgotten how much I love SA revolvers!

I like it a lot. The Ruger single actions are fine handguns and made like a bankvault.

That's a good buddy to have. Both the friend and the gun!

Cool deal man, its too bad you weren't able to get your dad's gun, but congrats on the one you did get. I know that feeling about inheriting guns. My grandpa had a .357, a .44 and a .380 that my uncle got when he died several years ago. I remember going to my grandpa's house often and admiring those handguns in the wooden, clear pistol cabinet they sat in on his living room wall. This year I got my NY pistol permit and my uncle said that when I get home from school in November he's going to sign them over to me and give them to me to have. I can't wait to see and shoot these guns, they're among the closest things we have in the family to heirlooms.

Dad has an early Blackhawk (flat-top model) in .357.....and a pile of letters from Ruger asking him to send it in for the transfer bar retrofit!

I've got the Super Blackhawk in 44mag w/ the 6 1/2" barrel. Love it. It's a fine shooting machine. Also my side arm for hunting season.

While there are fancier and more expensive SA's on the market, you just can't go wrong with a Blackhawk.....or a Vaquero, for that matter.
