If I may add, dont discount your daily carry gun with the right loads.
You have to take into consideration the cost's that are going to be incurred and you need to think about how well you will shoot your new gun and the costs associated with practice in a new caliber. If you are already proficient with what you have why not look at some ammo better suited to what your looking for. Buffalo Bore and double tap make some real high performance ammo that you might be better off than a gun you may not be able to afford to practice with, my opinion is such I would rather have my daily carry gun with some hotter loads than something I only shoot every couple of months because of cost or availability of ammo. Never overlook the recoil that is going to be associated with these powerhouses also.

A black bear rarely goes over 200lbs in Fla if my sources are correct so I would think that either the Glock 20 basicly a .41mag in a high cap pistol should cover that pretty well or maybe a Ruger Redhawk with a 4"barrel in .44 mag. The bigger concearn for me would be 2 legged predators and in that avenue the Glock has it all over the Ruger. I personally wouldnt feel undergunned with the Glock. Get a good belt holster and double mag carrier and you should be good to go. But then again I carry a 1911 even when hiking/trout fishing in Montana and the bears there get much larger so I like to live dangerously

Smith and Wesson 629 44Mag, 4 Inch, Satin Stainless, Rear Ramp White Outline Sights, Hogue Grips, 6rd
Loaded with:
Heavy .44 Magnum Pistol & Handgun Ammunition

The short story is a S&W 629 4" .44 mag loaded with 305 grain doing 1300fps.

I have been reading around and it does seem like the typical bear charges from 30 or 40 feet away. This is probably not going to even give me time to empty a revolver much less the Glock I was looking at.
The 629 does not hold up to a steady diet of heavy .44 mag ammo, My crane started not locking up right and there was excessive end shake in 500 rds of 300 grain Hornady's with a close to max load of H110, or AA9, the Ruger Redhawk shrugs the extra punishment off with no problems, the super Redhawk or Alaskan are way too heavy to be good pack guns unless you are in big bear country, Think Grizz or Polar.

I would choose 15+1 rounds of 10mm over 6 rounds of 44mag any day, but that goes back an old argument.

More rounds, less recoil (vs the 44mag), and a weapon/cal choice that will do the job you are asking of it.
I take it all back - I'd get a 50 cal sniper rifle with a 20x scope and a huge bipod.

With the right (Double Tap!) loads the Glock 20 (or 29) will more than do the job. Yes 6 rounds from a .500 would certainly do more damage, but I'll take my chances with 15 very hot 10mm loads and two more mags of the same.

If I have to go heavier than it's time for the 12 ga with slugs.

Not sure how big the black bears get in your neck of the woods but out here in Az. the average is around 250-300lbs. I usually carry an XD .45 loaded with 230gr FMJ when in the woods. I think you'll be just fine with a 10mm. Consider this as well, the 10mm is almost the same as a .41 magnum. I just loaded up some .41 magnum 210 gr Speer GDHP at a supposed velocity of 1,100fps which is about on par with the load you posted. Unless your bears are really big, like northern rocky mountain area big, get the 10mm.

I was watching a black bear hunt on the outdoor channel yesterday where the hunter was using a bow. He took 2 of them while on the expedition. I guess the big thing to remember if hunting a predatory animal is to not miss vitals. If you do, don't lose sight of the animal if at all possible.
