Short answer:

If it is a smooth bore you may shoot rifled slugs (the all lead type).

If it is a rifled bore you may shoot sabot slugs (the plastic encased type).

What kind of barrel is on it?

If its just a smooth bore barrel you are good to go with just about anything you want to feed it.

If the barrel has a replaceable choke, get a rifled choke and you should be good with any type of slug,

But i would only use shot or rifled slugs if it has a fixed, or modified/full choke.

Yes you can.

AFAIK, Mossberg doesn't make a rifled barrel for a 590, so you'll get the best results out of Foster-type or rifled slugs. You can shoot sabots out of it, but they will just be more expensive and rather inaccurate.

What the above posters have said is true, the 590 can handle slugs just fine, though you should go with the rifled variety if you are leaving it a smoothbore (no rifled choke tube). The only Mossberg you need to watch out for with slugs is the 835/935 Ulti-Mag guns. Their barrels are overbored out to nearly 10 gage dimensions, and would be seriously damaged by firing slugs. With that exception, slugs can be safely fired in most smoothbore shotguns.

yeah but if you put a full choke on a 28" barrel its not adviseable.

short of that your good to go, and +1 for rifled slugs.

They do have models that have a normal 12ga smooth bore that can shoot slugs, and also make a rifled slug barrel as well. But if it's the turkey 835/935 then it's got the 10ga barrel. And slugs are not allowed. And that's the one I have
