LCP or Kel-tec SD ammo

Hey guys,
I know the whole pocket 380 debate can go on forever so Im not trying to start another thread on that. My question is what kind of ammo do you shoot and what kind do you carry for your smaller pistol? Theres a ton of options out there and Im a sucker for flashy advertising so maybe you guys can help me make a good choice. I know I cant go wrong with many of the mainstream brands but what are your thoughts and experiences with .32-.380 ammunition?

I haven't been able to get ahold of any yet, but I have heard very good things about the Hornady Critical Defense and Corbon DPX ammo as far as penetration and expansion goes. Right now I am just using Federal Hydrashoks as that is all I could find.

I am using Corbon DPX in my LCP currently. It was $35 freakin dollars for 20 rounds though. The Statistics really speak for themselves though.

Velocity: 956
FPE: 162
Pen: 10.9”
Exp: .645”

Another one I'd like to try is Corbon's 90gr regular JHP:

Velocity: 950
FPE: 181
Pen: 13.3”
Exp: .463”

These numbers were taken from a website where the user was actually shooting and crono'ing the rounds out of an LCP, not what's stated on the box. Getting anywhere above 10" penetration and over .45" expansion is where I'd want to be with .380 ammo. The 'energy' really isn't as big a deal in .380 IMHO because let's face it, you're not putting anyone into hydrostatic shock with ANY .380's force.

Corbon DPX
It is my understanding that this ammo was specifically designed for the .380, and is NOT compromised.

I'm not sure I understand why Ball ammo would be more advantageous. I understand folks are concerned with penetration in the .380 - but when there are modern .380 hollowpoints that achieve 10"+ penetration I don't think switching to ball ammo is necessary.

In my view, you want to make the biggest hole possible in a vital area to stop your target effectively. A .380 FMJ is going to make a .355 hole and very likely keep on going. Most of the quality hollowpoints offered out there are going to open up much larger and many will stay in the target, ensuring what little energy the .380 does possess all gets dumped into the target (although even some of the hollowpoints are likely to overpenetrate).

.380 ACP is an anemic round compared to 9mm, .40s&w and .45acp. But that doesn't mean it's so "un-lethal" that suddenly a hollowpoint design becomes useless. If it were 10-20 years ago and manufacturers weren't putting out as many solid-performing JHP .380 designs, then I could see the wadcutter or FMJ rationale some are espousing.

When penetration numbers are found it's typically the best you'll see out of that bullet under perfect circumstances. 10" may translate to only 6 inches when you actually shoot someone with it.

Which is why everything I shoot has to penetrate a minimum of 16". It's a fail safe for those times when a BG is wearing a lot of clothing, the bullet hits a bone, the bullet expands too much or if it's not a straight on shot.

I carry 102gr Golden Saber's in mine.. Somebody on rugerforum.com did a wet pack test and they performed really well. The Corbon DPX would be great too if you can find them

How many holes can you put through a body and miss vital organs ??

Penetration that misses vitals is just a hole, and in a FMJ ... It's a smaller hole.
