My brother has one so I get to shoot it whenever I want. It's cool but it is kind of gimmicky. As a self defense firearm there are better options, although it would make a nice snake gun.

I have one. Never had any bad issues with it. Lots of fun to shoot, but 45 long colt is expensive and hard to find.

Shot one the other day at the range.
I found it a bit heavy for it's caliber, rather loose fit (the guy said he'd bought it new the other week, and this was the first time he's shot it--about 10 rounds through it, and the cylinder didn't lock up very tight), accuracy was so-so using .45's, but not bad for shotshells (duh).
Honestly--if I lived someplace with a snake problem (I don't), this would make sense. Also, since I've used a 8" .45/410 Contender to shoot pigeons inside a barn (wouldn't blow holes in the roof), the Judge could have other uses. Otherwise, it makes a great range toy.
As a SD pistol, though, I'd rank it right up there with a .17 snubnose...it's a gun, sure...but not a very good one.

When I think of a SD pistol or revolver, the Judge isn't what first comes to mind. It is rather large (long cylinder) and kind of bulky and heavier than I would prefer.

Like most weapons, it has its niche. We use one for SD in a condo setting. After looking at everything out there, ended up with the Judge based on stopping power vs over penetration. At condo ranges, the #4 shot we ended up with should disable an intruder with minimum chance of going thru the walls and hitting either the neighbors we like or the ones we don't like . Been a lot of ragging on the lack of penetration of the .410 shell, but you can't pay me enough to stand in front of one. And yes, my XD-45 has better penetration but also runs too much risk of zipping thru the walls and hitting an uninteded target.

Gimmick that doesn't serve any purpose. .45LC ballistics are a joke, 3" .410 shells are not easily obtainable and they don't do anything that a quality 9mm, 40, 45 couldn't do....except expand to create a larger wound cavity. You can buy shotshells for any caliber handgun anyways. The thing is so big and heavy, nobody is going to carry it and that's a good thing, these don't need to be relied upon to protect anyone.
Save your money and buy something else that's worthwhile.
It's not your XD that will "overpenetrate". If you're that worried, you should buy different ammo, not a different handgun (Judge)

I was satisfied with mine up until two days ago. While out shooting it decided to crap out. For some reason the pin that holds the cylinder on shattered, and took the indexing mechanism with it. The gun only has 50rds of 45LC, and 150rds of shotshells through it. I am very unhappy with it now. I wont make any further Judge-ments until I see how Taurus handles this.

I've enjoyed mine. I've had it since Feb without a problem. I think if you look at whats available in 45Colt, you will find it is a very good round.
