Recommend a non-semi-auto .22 rifle
My kids both want .22's for their birthdays. Assuming that I do decide to get them, what would you recommend? I don't want semi-autos, since they need to learn trigger control before they start flinging a lot of lead down range. I also want to keep it fairly inexpensive, like under $150 for each one. However, I really like levers and pumps myself, so if there is a decent leveraction .22 or a pump action .22 for under $250 or so, I'm open to that as well.
My daughter is nearly adult height, so no Chipmunk or Cricket for her, but it's a possibility for my son.
What would you recommend?

I am not up to par on 22 prices. Personally i have a remington speedmaster (semiauto) and a Ruger 10/22. My dad has an old remington pump that is fun, and a sweet little winchester lever. That little lever is run. I think they are a little more than what you are looking for but check out a Henry lever. I have always wanted one of those just never bought one yet. Henry Goldenboy. Good luck. Thanks for introducing your kids to shooting.

For a lever action 22lr I really like the Marlin 39a but I think it is above your budget. You might be able to find once used.
I like the Marlin 980 for a bolt action rifle. I have seen them for around $250. I favor Marlin over Ruger but I am sure Ruger has something just as good.

I have a remy 597 but its semi auto. I would recommend a bolt action there are alot of very accurate bolt actions out there. Take a look at Remington bolt action, Savage, CZ and Marlin. If you like the lever action Marlin makes them. However I don't know the price range on these but it will give you something to look into. If I may check out rimfirecentral they have lots of excellent info on all the brands. Its a forum so you can ask questions too. Good luck and let us know what you decide on.

Picked one of these up used for $100 and it shoots great.
This one shoots well too and will go to my son next summer. It is just a hair big for him now.
I have a 9422 Lever gun and it shoots great, but not in your price range. Also, lever guns are not the easiest gun to shoot from a bench if that is what you want to do.

Prob going to have a hard time finding a lever or pump gun in that price range. I just sold a used Henry for $250. I find single shot and magazine fed bolt guns all the time at pawn shops in your budget range. and bolt guns are in my opinion one of the best way to teach trigger discipline. You can still get a little quick with the rate of fire with a lever or pump action as they both beg for rapid cycling of the action.
I know you don't want semi but the Marlin Model 60 is awesome as a first gun. Reliable, easy to maintain, & accurate. I still have the one my father gave me as my first and he has had it since he was 19. He has since passed and that gun just keeps on rocking.. I think I may have cleaned it once in the 20 years I have had it and it never gives me problems.
Good luck, and what a great way to spend quality time with your family. Keep up the good work.

I'll second the Marlin 60 ... New they are in your price range, and used they can be found around $100 or less.
Trigger control can be learned on a semi-auto, and all you will do by giving them a bolt/lever action is (potentially) have them wanting something else sooner, because they are a pain, if you don't want/like that style.
