Marlin or Savage.

Hey guys and gals. I have decided that i need to buy a rifle in .17 HMR. Its not my fault i just have to do it . I am thinking about either the Marlin or Savage variety, but do not know which one to go with. Price is a concern. Also what would be a good, yet inexpensive, scope to mount up? Thanks for any input.

I don't think you can go wrong with either of those makers, especially in a 17HMR rifle.

Try over at: http://www.rimfirecentral.com/ for some great info on all things rimfire.

thanks, what about a scope. I don't really know anything about scopes at all, or what the numbers mean, eg 4x32 etc..

i will give you a full report tomorrow of my marlin 917V. I am taking it out to site int eh scope. I was told all one needs on these is just a $40 Tasco and it will hit almost one shot groupings. I bought my marlin from Walmart for $187 and had a Tasco scope from there for $30. I have heard good things about the savage though, just din't have the extra dollars and teh Marlin comes with teh same features. Heavy barrel, drilled and tapped reciever, scope ring bases. Just be warned, expensive rings wont fit on the "weaver" bases they provide. Ended up having to use teh cheapest tasco rings to mount my scope up. But she looks beautiful!

Millet makes some very nice rings that fit the 11mm dovetail used on most rimfire rifles.

On my Marling 25MN (22 Mag) I have a 4-12X50mm Simons. Although an inexpesive Tasco will work fine. The more you can spend on scope the happier you will be. I had a $20 (on sale) 3-9x32 Bushnell on it orgianally and the step up in magnification and objective lens size makes a huge difference as the ranges get longer and light get dimmer. 4-12 is probably a bit overkill for a 22Mag but it does make it nice. The 50mm objective lens really gathers a lot of light which is nice in the early moring and late evening.

If I was putting together a 17HMR I would try to get at least 12 power if not 14. You want to be able to see those tiny little bullet holes at 100 yards.

Take a look at http://www.natchezss.com/ they always seem to have pretty good deal going on scopes.

I got the bi-poid at Walmart for around $39.00. Its called the Rock Mount by Shooters Ridge (5th one down on this list http://www.shootersridge.com/bi_pods.htm ) and is adjustable from 9-13". I have heard it is comparable to many expensive brands but I don't have any experience with other brands of bi-pod. Al I can tell you is it looks siminlar to others I have seen around. I am pretty happy with it. THe only hting is I wish I had kept parts of it sprayed with REM Oil as 2 small parts have small bits of rust, but its no big deal. Overall, if I needed another bi-pod for another gun, I would go to Walmart and get another one of these.
