It is easy for some to confuse viability and effectiveness... there are certainly more effective rounds available if one can shoot them well. A gun of almost any caliber is better than being totally unarmed... but being unable to properly use what you are carrying is much worse IMO.

Being capable, confident and effective with your self-defense weapon is something too many overlook... just buying and carrying the thing is the easy part!

My suggestion is this. When you take her shopping for a gun do not fascinate yourself on the subcompacts and compacts. Women have a very hard time concealing a gun on there person due to body shape. When purse carrying there are pretty much no limits on size. Have her pick out her choices and shoot them or at least shoot something similiar. Her comfort with the weapon is going to be the one all end all.

The topic was better CCW for my Wife.

First off, I do not think the gun is the answer, just another tool to use n self defense if it can be applied. Having a gun in a purse make it a very unviable tool.

Mind set, awareness, antici[pation, and angles can beat strenght & speed. I found out just how true this statement was this weekend. If a gun is a tool, use the tool that work best for you. Caliber is just a preference based on tool application.

If your wife is truling into learning how to defend her self, invest that first $500 in a reality based self defense course, then go shopping for her first tool.

My wife has the same problem with her Bersa .380, hard for her to work the slide and she is not comfortable with the decock. We are looking at the Ruger LCR, or maybe an SP101. I have always had good luck with Ruger wheelguns.

My wife had the same problem with a Bersa .380.
I did some research on line and then went shopping. I compared the Ruger LCR, S&W 642, Taurus 850 and Ruger SP101.
Ruger was much heavier than the others, I was concerned that my wife would not be willing to carry the extra weight. Plus if I had brought that SP101 home I knew that I would have a hard time letting her have it, I would want to keep it for myself.
Taurus was a nice gun but had the worst trigger pull of any of them.
That left the Smith and the LCR. There was no perceivable weight difference, I'm sure that if you look at the specs there is a difference but I could not tell holding them in my hand. Triggers were very close with the Ruger having the slight edge.
I chose to buy the Ruger LCR. I was happy with my choice after I shot it. Four inch group at 15 ft on the first 5 shots.
Best of all my wife likes this gun and will carry it.
