An officer I work with recently broke her hand and suffered severe tendon damage while effecting an arrest. Until her hand heals, she can't handle her .45, but the .380 is not a problem. By your arguments, neither of these women should be carrying a gun.
My argument is not that the .380 is the end-all in personal defense, just that it is a viable option in some situations. If the .380 is what you can shoot accurately, then go for it. If you can handle something bigger, then you should...but what if you suffered an injury today? Would you stop carrying or just carry something you could handle?

I have a friend in a similar situation - severe carpal tunnel syndrome. She carries a S&W 317 - .22 rimfire revolver. It's what she can handle and fire effectively; her "choice" involves carrying this gun or not being armed at all. I'm glad she didn't take Yosemite's CCW class, since she wouldn't be carrying anything at all, having been told that her only choice isn't appropriate for self defense.
Great advice.

And just what makes you think I voice my personal opinions in the classroom? I teach what is required by law in the state of AZ and that's the end of it. If your friend successfully completed the required course she has my blessing to go straight to you and arm herself with a .380.
Frankly, I really don't care what any of you carry. You can carry water pistols if you want. The discussion deteriorated from a simple comment and went all over the map to wind up here all because DANP refused to recognize that I was simply voicing my own opinion of the .380's capabilities, MY OPINION concerning it's suitability for self defense and decided to take it to the moon and back.
Incidentally, there are several occasions on record where a victim was carrying an undersized weapon and it turned out that he/she would have been better off with nothing since all it did was piss off the attacker and made things worse. Of course, I'm not going to get into that argument as the variables are limitless and there are undoubtedly thousands who refuse to believe it.

I find your intellectual honesty infuriating. Now you are trying to dilute my statements entirely by falsely suggesting that I believe a 45 is for everyone. When did I say that Dan? Read through the thread 50 times if you have to and you will see I never said that. I have cited firearms from 9mm all the way up to 45 as acceptable IN MY OPINION!!

Tell you what danp. Forget the charts or the oss theory. Wrap a watermelon in a medium weight jacket. Put it out at 20, 15 and 10yds. Put a few factory .380 rounds into it and tell me how bad you hurt the bad guy. (watermelon)
UGH!! That's enuff for me. I promise this is my last post.
Bye bye, adios, sayonnara and toodle pip
Have a great weekend

Wow I am so sorry. I didn't mean for my question to start an uproar! As for my thoughts on size I can see some good points to each side.

Well, I guess that'd be helpful if I'm ever attacked by rogue watermelons...
To the OP--DanP's advice (a couple of pages ago) of taking her to a shop/range and letting her try several pistols and finding what works for her is pretty much the smartest thing said so far.
No self-proclaimed interweb expert is going to be able to give you better information than that.

Don't sweat the small stuff. YS has an opinion that he beleives everyone else should have as well. He refuses to accept the fact that the .380 is a viable tool for self defense and has been considered one on both sides of the Atlantic since it's inception.
Have your wife shoot some guns and pick the one she likes. If you want to read about some real-world ballistics tests, check here: The Box O' Truth - The Box O' Truth
