You can get some hardwood grips and CAREFULLY sand them to fit your specific needs. I bought a set of the Pau Ferro grips for my 229 from Midway USA and they have plenty of meat to allow custom shaping, sizing and contouring. I'm not sure you can cut them back to an overall smaller size than the factory grips without jeopardizing the integrity, but you can customize the shape to fit your mitts.

Try contacting Hogue grips. They have been doing a lot of aluminim grips for Sig's recently and they may have just what your looking for. I suspect that the aluminum grips your seeing on Sig's site are actually made by Hogue and then marked up. As for Sig's hardwood grips, they typically run much wider than the factory polymer grips. The Rosewood grips that came on my P229 are huge in comparison to the standard grips, however I found that I shoot a lot better with them so I am keeping them.

Take a look at the following link, they may be what you looking for and they are a bit less costly than Sig's price. Unfortunately the description is totaly lacking on the width so you'll have to ask them to measure the width for you.

SIG Sauer P228 - P229 Checkered Aluminum - Brushed Gloss Black Anodized [28176] - $139.95 : Hogue Inc., The Best Value In Handgun Grips, Rifle Stocks and Accessories - Bar None!
