I have a Beretta 92FS Centurion, which is a 92FS with a shorter slide. I just purchased a Springfield XDm 9mm. Bottom line, in ten years I have not had a single issue with the Beretta...not even a jam. However, I do not shoot it accurately, it is WAY too heavy/bulky for concealed carry, and the grip is downright uncomfortable. However, I purchased crimson trace grips for it which make it dead accurate and got the extended 20rd Mec-Gar magazine so now this is my ultimate home defense weapon, though it no longer gets much range time.
For CC, an actual match-grade range gun, reliability, and overall fun, the Springfield XDm is my favorite.
I would never sell the Beretta and would have no hesitations betting my life on it. However, if I had to choose between the two, I would go with the Springfield XDm.
This is all just my opinion and personal experience. I am by no means an expert.

I don't have a 92F but I do own an XD 9mm stainless SubCompact, a Stoeger Cougar 8000 9mm (Beretta designed and made on Beretta machinery in Turkey), and a Taurus PT111 9mm.
The XD SC is a sweet shooter with a smooth trigger and good grip feel. The slide is chunky for a 9mm and when I wear it IWB, I can feel it. The shorter of the two mags requires a Pearce Mag extension or else my pinky finger falls off on recoil. The stainless slide makes it very low maintenance. I like the loaded chamber indicator and the stiker indicator. It does not allow for second strike on a bad primer. There is no manual safety (though several passive safeties). It requires pulling the trigger to disassemble.
I mention the Stoeger Cougar since you like Beretta designs. It was created as a more compact and smaller gripped alternative to the full size 92F. It has an inovative rotating barrel design that uses locking lugs like a rifle bolt. The grip is nice and the slide is nicely sculpted. It a very versatile medium size pistol and comes with two 15rd mags. I had to slightly tune the slide stop as it would lock back with one round left. It works perfectly now. Sweet shooter with low recoil and smoth as silk action. Easy take down (no trigger pull) and cleaning. Both the single and double action trigger pulls are excellent and contribute to good accuracy. As a double action, it allows second strike on a bad primer. There is an ambi decocker/safety that I find useful and easy to manipulate.
My current favorite carry pistol is a Taurus Millennium Pro PT111 9mm. It has a great single action trigger that allows second strike on a bad primer, has a slimmer slide than the XD SC, is easy to shoot accurately, and is very reliable. I did some minor tuning to increase extractor tension. It has a low maintenance stainless slide and a nicely shaped polymer frame/grip. It has a manual safety but would be better without it. It is not meant to be carried cocked and locked. If the trigger is very slightly held while the safety is snicked on, the safety will look like it is on safe, but in fact it is not and the gun could fire. Best to ignore the safety all together ansd rely on good trigger sense. The trigger must be pulled during disassembly.

to the OP have you considered a used berretta 92 ?
They can be had as cheap as $300, and at that dollar amount they are a compelling value compared to a new XD .... if you are on the fence a used 92 might be a winner for you.
For me personally i would go xd45 .... i do like the 92, and would like one some day. That being said with millions of them made, and available used, i see no reason to buy a taurus knock off.
Get the real deal used.

+1 on XD. Far superior to the other option.

I like both XD9 and the Taurus 92 -- it comes down to what is the intended function for the weapon.
For Daily Carry : XD9
For Target, Plinking, and HD : Taurus P-92
And you might want to hold them to make sure you are comfortable with the grip and you can operate the weapon without any difficulties.
The girl that I dated a while back loves the XD9 but she cannot rack the slide. She ended up shooting my stainless P92 all the time.

I agree with that 100%, between those two guns I carry my XD more, but still love the Beretta.

I'd go with the 92FS copycat!

Thanks for all the replies. I want something that could pull double duty (range toy and CCW later), so I think I will stick with the XD. Now to decide if I want the service or SC.

I shoot better with the service model and it wasn't a pain to CC for me. (I am fat...)
