Recomend Deer Rifle?

ruger 300 mag ...gr8 gun
i have taken over 60 deer w/ mine ... close range and long range
i took 2 this year at over 350 yards
7mag is a gr8 gun also

the mossberg 4x4 has some gr8 reviews on it also
i won one at our ducks unlimited dinner in nov. havent shot it yet
but looks like a well made gun

nice buck.. i think i'll be getting a left handed tikka .308 all-weather when i have all of my semi-auto stuff taken care of. i have some time since i think the bolt rifles are about the only type not on the hit list..

I got a savage model 10 in .308 heavy barrel, this thing drives tacks for sure. Its absolutely my favorite long range gun. They aren't a bad price, and leave more room in the budget for a nice scope.

Now, my dad's Barret model 99 is a great rifle too, a bit overkill, but.... who cares

Savage and Remington are the two brands that immediatly jump to my mind. Ruger also makes some good, relatively inexpensive rifle, if you want a rifle that has the mauser-style claw extractor.

For caliber, .30-06 and .308 are always good choices. Don't forget about the .270 win though. It works just as well as any .30 caliber round on deer, whitetail or mule, and it's capable if you ever get a chance to hunt elk. Plus the recoil on it is much more managable. It is just as easily found as either the .30-06 or .308, and since it is not a "military" round like the .308, and to a lesser extent the .30-06, there hasn't been a drastic shortage on it (at least around where I'm at).

well if your not including a scope in the $500-$600, you have plenty of good choices.

as you mentioned and seem to prefer, .308 is a great round, probably my overall favorite do everything round.

the 30-06 is darn near as accurate, but you gain more variations in weights you can shoot with the 30-06. The CMP does sell us surplus 30-06, you can get 7.62x51 (.308 ) surplus from all sorts of countries of varying quality and price.

my top choice would be a remmy 700

and you cant go wrong with a .308 or 30-06.

Maybe biased but I think the Tikka T3 is a sweet rifle for the price. Its got a Sako barrel and is guaranteed to shoot a 1 inch group at 100 yards with 3 shots. The trigger is also very crisp and adjustable. Mines light enough from the factory but it can be turned down more. Go for the .308 !!!
