I still have it. We'll, I own it. Just need my to get my Dad to ship it to me. I never grabbed it after I went to school, graduated and moved away.
How are the ballistics of this ammo? I was under the impression that 30-30 has a large drop at distance.

+100's as thats how many deer ive shot with mine. 308 or 270 for distance and power here in PA. also depends on terrain. Ive carried a 30 30 for brush hunting at times as well.

I would say 30-06 or 7mm Mag. With 7mm Mag you will get a little more versitility if you want to bag a Moose or Elk.

Rem. 700 in 7mm Mag......my opinion, but will take any game in the US. I have a BDL bedded and will drive tacks at 200 yds. with OTC ammo, got it for grad. present over 25 yrs. ago and still going strong. JMHO, good luck and happy hunting.

Considering 600 for rifle and glass I say buy used. a rem 788 or savage with accutrigger. Come to mind for the internet. But a gun show might find you something you really like or the used section of a gun store. 30-06 lately I've been seeing a lot of used nice rifles around for 450-650 and that often includes decent glass.

Thanks for the recommendation. I wasn't familiar with the .300 Rem Ultra Mag. I like the Power Levels 1-3 for different game.
You threw another wrench into my decision.

Hey, there is nothing wrong with the remington 770. I have one and have never missed a deer with it yet. I have had no problems with it and it is pretty much weather proof with the parkerized finish and synthetic stock. It has a weaver rail on top so you can have any optics you want. Overall its a great rifle. Only around 500 with scope.

300 rem ultra is a great caliber til you go buy a box and fall over at the price..unless you need to shoot elk or mulies at 1200 yards this caliber is overkill for PA deer hunting, trust me I live in PA not out west...I use a Marlin 30-30 for 90% of my PA deer hunting, if I am going somewhere I need to shoot over 100 yards, 30-06 or 300 Win Mag is my choice, but you are going to get a million opinions on what is the "best". The 30-06 is a great all around gun, get one, keep the 30-30 too, and build your collection from there.

Another vote for the Savage. It's a great rifle for a great price. Unless I buy something really high end one day, every rifle I buy will be a Savage. I don't see the point in paying more for a rifle that's not any better. I like a 7mm Mag for deer. It's slight overkill, but that means extra assurance if I don't make a great shot. Plus it will work for any other game I will ever hunt.
