Recomend Deer Rifle? This is a discussion on Recomend Deer Rifle? within the Non-XD Handguns forums, part of the Other Handgun Talk category; 25.06 fast and accurate. Last deer I opened up the heart had literally exploded. Quite satisfactory....

Same external dimensions, the internal dimensions are different enough that if you took it apart and looked at the two side by side... you wouldn't be able to tell the difference unless someone showed you.
The 7.62 is fine to fire out of the .308 chambered rifle. Not the other way around.
The reason some people get confused is because a rifle chambered for .223 is not designed to fire 5.56x45... but the other way around is fine.

Huh.
I stand corrected.

I looked pretty closely at the follow on to the 710, the 770 which is currently selling. Still with Bushnell scope. Turn off was a plastic piece on the back of the bolt. Did some quick checking on internet for 770 concerns and where I'm glad AKSpraya has had good luck with his 710 I think this has a spotty rep. If you go Remington I'd spend the extra and get a 700 for build quality. Just an opinion by one who almost bought a 770 until I got on the net and did some investigation.

Looking at most of the answers, I would have to agree with the .308. Very good round with moderate range and power. For some flat land shooting at White tails, I probably would go with the M77 in 7mm. Mule deer, probably stick the .308..
If you want to reach out, maybe move up to the 300win mag.,,, impressive round.
Happy hunting!

Could also consider another Marlin 336 .30-30 with the lever Evolution ammo to get better range

My choice was Ruger M77 (stainless, laminate stock) in .300 win mag. I figure that between that and my .22 I should be covered for anything I want to hunt. The nice thing about .300WM is that there are loads that are comparable to .30-06 or .338WM. Also, factory loads are readily available nearly everywhere.
That said, if keeping the budget down was a high priority, I would probably have gone with a Savage in .30-06. Everyone raves about Savages and their out of the box accuracy. I've shot one in .17hmr and it was very nice.

If you still have the 30-30 try some Hornady leverlution ammo.

I've had my eye on these Savage Weather Warriors
Savage Centerfire Hunting Rifle 16FCSS
Accu-trigger Accu-stock - stainless and synthetic ... but they are up around $700 for the one with detachable box magazine.
