A co-worker had said that the reason he doesn't have one, is he doesn't want the feds dropping by at anytime to check it. Kinda sounded funny to me, as I think you would have to be a pretty big "fish" for the feds to want to swing by..........
Thinking about getting one for my .308 bolt guns, they say about a 30-33db reduction for a .308
Even worth it?

The feds won't stop by any time, in fact, unless you've somehow broken the law, they won't stop by at all just because you have a Class III firearm. The quick list:
1) Verify you are allowed to own Class III firearms in your state.
2) Decide if you want to do individual ownership or go the trust route (big thing here is whether your CLEO will sign off: with individual ownership, they have to, with a trust, they don't).
3) If buying in state, find the Class III dealer you want to buy from; if buying from our of state, find a Class III dealer in state to do the transfer.
4) Pay for Class III firearm, go to your Class III dealer, fill out paperwork.
5) Mail paperwork.
6) Wait
7) Wait some more
 Wait a little bit longer
9) Once paperwork is approved and returned, pick up Class III firearm.
10) Enjoy Class III firearm.

Sounds like your coworker is confusing Class III firearm ownership with having an FFL. If you have an FFL, the feds could stop by anytime.

I had my FFL's for 9 years.
I was aware that they (ATF) could perform a single paperwork compliance check a year at the business premises and only during normal business hours without a warrant. Any more than 1 check a year, they had to have a valid search warrant.
I have also been informed that the ATF can request to see a copy of the NFA paperwork (not the weapon, but the paperwork itself), but I have never heard of it happening and I am a member of several websites that cater to the NFA owners. Uzitalk and NFAtalk and Silencertalk specifically, and out of all those members of the various web forums, I have never heard of anyone getting a knock on the door.
Ever !
There would be a lot more going on than some agent being bored to ask you to see a piece of paper that they already have a copy of.

Think I am going to do it soon, going to go with a YHM for my .308 bolt guns.
Going to look up some vids to see if it's a quiet can

Some camera's do a very poor job of demonstrating how something really sounds because they have built in gain limiters and others "doctor" their audio levels before uploading
Granted watching videos is probably the best way for anyone to do reasonable research, just be aware that some people shoot subsonic bullets and some people shoot over the counter supersonic bullets that drastically change the results too, so try to watch as many different video's as you can of the specific silencer you're researching to get a fair representation of how one may sound.
With that said, YHM isn't the quietest silencer manufacturer out there, though they are generally more affordable than the "quieter" ones.
This is one area that you don't want to skimp on because what you buy is what you're stuck with because there is a really small market for used silencers so it's better to get the best you can from the beginning, even if it means laying down a few more $100 bills to begin with, is still cheaper than buying and transferring another because you're not totally satisfied with your first one.
Best of luck and if you get one, please be sure to update the topic so we all can watch your video if you do one, and at least, do a product review of it.

You make a great point. I enjoy the finer weapons, why wouldn't I enjoy a nicer can? After all, like you said, I'm kinda stuck with it!!!
Gonna save up a few hunskies more and just be happy from the start. I made that mistake when I first got into guns, bought a few cheap ones only to sell them at a loss, and have to come out of pocket more for what I really wanted....

May want to measure dB's of your firearm currently, then check -dB rating of the silencer you want to see if it would bring it to hearing-safe levels. Then check dB's after installing. That way you can also 'know' if the silencer works as advertised.
But I'm also just assuming that's what you want it for... to make it hearing safe so you can hunt/plink without hearing protection... or at least without 'as much' hearing protection.
Entirely guess and speculation: Can a .308 be made 100% hearing safe?.. I didn't think so but I don't know too much about the complexities of cans, admittedly. Supersonic is supersonic, I always figured. I don't think suppressed AR's are ever 'hearing safe', but I believe that's because of the noise at the ejection port and that bullet travel still breaks SB. Bolt guns suppressors would seem more effective as there's no ejection port through which sound might escape.

I haven't looked at suppressors in a long time, but as I recall, your license will only be valid for a single firearm. Meaning you can't use the one suppressor on two different guns. Now, I'm not sure if you can fill out paperwork on both guns (2 applications) and use the same one for both THEN, or if you actually have to have 2 suppressors for 2 guns. And of course, the law may have changed since I last looked at it.
