Is online the best way to buy? I would assume, if bought online, that the Class 3 Dealer you mentioned would be the online store?
Yes, if the online dealer is selling a suppressor he is a Class 3 dealer. Also if you are in another state it has to be shipped to a local Class 3 dealer to do the transfer paperwork.

You have to pay for the suppressor in full prior to sending in the ATF paperwork and check for $200 tax stamp. Then the Class 3 dealer holds your suppressor until approved paperwork comes back. (About 6 months). then you can finally pick up the suppressor.

There is a lot of good info here Silencers Are Legal

I went the trust route and I'm waiting on two stamps myself. It's a lesson in patience for sure.

Don't forget the need for a threaded barrel. I paid $237.00 for mine.

AAC Tirant 45 Suppressor $850.00
EFK Threaded barrel $237.00
NFA Trust $600.00
Tax Stamp $200.00

Being able to hear after a violent home invasion... priceless.

Why does every one keep saying this? you will hear just fine after it's done and will not notice the noise during due to adrenaline (besides a little noise might do you a favor if you miss or they have friends and they leave). Generally speaking and depending on your state and local law enforcement they may confiscate the weapon used in a HD untill the investigation is complete. I would rather they "hold" my $500 ish HD gun than "hold" my $500 ish HD gun and $800 ish suppressor, just my 2 cents your mileage may vary. There are plenty of reasons to get one fun, easier on ears at range, not disturbing the neighbors while you hunt tree rats, there cool, just because you can.

Also for the OP I think you might be better off just buying one from a local class III dealer in your state as I believe (please correct me if I'm wrong) that if you buy from an online dealer not located in your state that it has to be transferred on a form 3 when shipped to get it to your local class III FFL dealer who might charge you large fee for the use of their "class II FFL" it might eat any savings you got by ordering online.

Let me guess, you're an audiologist who habitually shoots in small indoor ranges without hearing protection?

No I spent 5 months going house to house in Iraq and had my share of fire fights inside houses and my hearing is just fine. If my ears can take grenades & full auto from multiple weapons in a house I would guess the average person can take a few rounds going off god forbid they actually had to do so. I would guess a home invasion might be over by the end of the first magazine with either the intruder dead or fleeing or the home owner dead however it plays out and with a one time acute exposure to loud noise (witch can damage hearing) it is not chronic exposure that is the usual cause of hearing loss & damage. But I am not an expert you are correct and with my opinion as every thing else you read on the interwebs your mileage may vary.

You might want to have your hearing checked by someone other than Navy or VA audiologists. they "adjust your baseline" and say your hearing is fine.

An audiologist who is a member here weighed in on the topic of hearing damage due to shooting just a few weeks ago and said the opposite of everything you said.

You may not notice it yet, but your ears have probably been damaged. Or maybe your ears have super powers that allow them to withstand decibel levels that would crush a weaker man.

I'm a 31 year old Marine veteran and I have tinnitus. let me tell you, it isn't as fun a ride as you might think.

Do you have a link to that thread I would like to read it. Also have you ever tried Quietus I don't know if it works or helps I just hear alot of commercials for it maybe it might be worth a try.

ETA: I just read some reviews about Quietus on Amazon and they weren't good as far as getting results sorry.

First of all thank you for your service and welcome home.

I would wager that your hearing is damaged if you've been exposed to that much pressure on your eardrums. You may not notice it a lot while you're still young, but when you get as old as I am, believe me, it sneaks up on you until you can't hardly hear a clap of thunder.

It starts out with tinninitus (ears ringing all the time). And when you're laying in the bed at night when everything is quiet is when you'll notice it the most.

Then you get into regular arguments with wifey poo because the TV is so loud.

Then you catch yourself saying "huh?" a lot

There is an old saying: "What you live through in your youth, will bite you on the ass when you're old."
