Greetings from Tulsa!
New to XDtalk and new to high caliber handguns. Have owned .22s since I was a child and I'm experienced with rifles and shotguns.
I have yet to buy an XD yet, but this is what I have narrowed down my purchase to. Struggling with whether to go for the XD Service Model 9mm or the XDm. I prefer an 9mm for the lighter recoil and less expensive ammo. However, I love all the new features on the XDm and think it looks very cool. I have handled both, but fired neither. Love the balance and look of both. These two pistols feel the best in my hands over the Glocks, Sigs, Rugers, and others I have tried. Not sure I can be patient and wait until they come out with a XDm 9mm as I would like to buy something this week. I have enjoyed lurking and gaining information on this forum. I have been heavily researching XDs and other guns for several weeks now and I'm ready to buy. Open to suggestions for which to purchase and opinions about whether the difference in caliber is large enough to offset the great features of the XDm. Oh, I almost forgot to mention that I am primarily interested in recreational/target shooting, but also want a handgun for home/self defense. Thanks! Welcome from the Hoosier land!
Being in Tulsa, you have a heck of a range there. Have you been to USSA? I was there 2 or 3 weeks ago for the 2008 Pro-Am and was pretty impressed with the area.

Welcome to the forum. I would go ahead and get the 9 and start shooting. If you are sure you want an XD M maybe you should get the Sub Compact now for CC. These guns were plenty safe before the thumb safety.
