Again, thanks to everyone who have welcomed me!

I just got home with the new XD, and I have a newbie question. When I hand a gun to someone, I always drop the mag, then rack the slide and lock it open to check the barrel and look down the feed tube. First thing, I find it somewhat difficult to lock the slide and at the same time, hold the rear handle safety in. I did manage to develope a little side-hand technique to do this reliably. But here is my question.

When I lock the slide open with no mag inserted in the gun, it appears that the ejector is locked out in the chamber. Is that normal? Looks like it could be damaged by a clumsy finger sitting out like that. When I lock the slide with an empty mag inserted, I don't see the ejector.

Thanks.

Here's a followup question, having to do with racking the slide and having to hold the grip safety down. Can anyone here rack the slide with a slingshot grip? I can't push the slide lock up at the same time as holding in the grip safety. I need to use an overhand grip. But when using an overhand grip, I am forced to cover the ejection port with my hand. I cannot perform the overhand behind the ejection port, because I have to keep the grip safety held in, and therefore cannot push in the slide lock at the same time. I was told that one shoudn't rack a slide by covering the ejector port with an overhand grip, when there is a round in the chamber. I read it is possible to cause a jam, or worse, cause an unfired round to detonate in your hand.

Can anyone here lock the slide with an overhand grip, without covering the ejection port? (with a the magazine out, of course.)
