New to Houston not a new member *Anyone know of a fishing charter*

I need a little help with settling in the Houston area. I just moved here and will need to get a TX CWL. I live in Seabrook/Kemah area. Can someone recommend a place to take my class. I'm really would like to take a course from a good instructor.

Also I want to charter a boat to do some fishing. Can someone recommend a boat that they have used?
Or know of boats I should stay away from.
Thanks guys

The instructor at Shiloh is really good which made the time fly by quick. However thats a bit of a drive for you since its in the 249/1960 area. I've heard of a range in the Friendswood area but I don't venture to that part of town.

It's on the opposite side of Houston from you, but I think it's worth it.

Welcome to CD Shoot - Hot Well's Location

Just took the CHL class last weekend. It's a mom and son operation (Cheryl and Donovan). Donovan taught our entire class, and did an excellent job of it. Absolutely wonderful. I've heard his mother teaches it just as well.

I think it's $110 or so. What's really nice is that you can show up with nothing but your driver's license. You can even use their weapon if you want. (I'd verify availability ahead of time if you want to. You just have to buy ammo for it and there is a gun shop next door). They help you get all of your paperwork ready to send. They go through it with you, tell you what to fill out, what to sign, give you an addressed envelope to send it in, they take and print out your required photos, they have a LEO come in and do fingerprints during the class, the feed you lunch...

You show up with nothing, and leave with all of the paperwork/photos/fingerprints in an addressed envelope. You just have to fill out one sheet they don't make you do in class and then put stamps on it and drop it in the mailbox. Pretty nifty.

I wook Jim Pruetts CHL class which uses Hot Well's for the shooting test. Yea its a bit on the other side of town for you, but if you find closer classes find out if they provide a notary and fingerprint taker or not. At least for Pruetts they provided both, so it saved me a bunch of hassle of running around finding a notary and someone to take prints. Also fed us breakfast and lunch so that was a bonus too. So it might be a bit of a drive for you but youll be able to mail the application out the next day which I did.

Thanks guys. I don't mind driving an hr or so if I can knock very thing out at once. I'll have to look up both of the instructors. As for as the person that taught your class did you like the information you learned. I had my CWL for the past couple of years and am really wanting to find a good instructor.

Yea, the information was great.

There are instructors that teach the minimum required by law, and there are instructors that really try to educate you.

CD Shoot is the latter.

The fact that they help you take care of all of the paperwork (forms/prints/pictures) right there in class is enough to want to take it there. Their great instruction is icing on the cake.

The only thing you don't get is instruction on shooting technique, but that's not the purpose of the class. You're expected to be able to hit a target with your pistol (or one of theirs). But, the shooting qual is easy enough that someone with little or no shooting experience has a good chance of passing.
