And as Tally stated, do a search in the ammo section.
That article said that all the ammo except the superlight stuff was coming out of those 3 in. barrels at 800ish feet per second. That just doesn't add up.

Anyway magazine articles aside here is a 124grn +p Gold Dot fired from my XD9SC

The EFMJ is a 200 grn +p fired from a 4" commander sized 1911 clone.

Welcome to the forum from Florida!

Best SD ammo is a matter of personal taste. Try several of the name brands and types until you find what your most comfortable with (Hydrashocks, Gold Dots, etc, etc).

A well placed shot is the most important thing.

You can have the absolute best ammo in the world and it won't do you a bit of good if you miss.

Welcome to the forum from UT! You are the one that will decide which ammo to carry. The local police departments buy what the bean counters(accountants) deem to be cost effective verses the 'best'. As for over penetration hitting some one down range, do you know of any instances that this has happened? I have seen cases of bystanders being injured by shots that missed the intended target but none that went through the bad guy and then hit someone behind them.

Good Luck on your search.
