Question newbie with mag release question

I'm sure glad I found you folks! I bought my XD40 yesterday. I'm having a hard time pressing the mag release button with my thumb. I have to move my hand around to get enough pressure on the button. Is this common or am I just a weakling?!
I tried a little bit of Rem oil, but no change.

Sailor:

Shouldn't be that stiff.... Is this the same with all of your magazines? (I have an XD-9 SC. Came with three mags.)

Also, are we talking loaded or unloaded? Slide back or in battery?

I've had issues getting a magazine to latch in another gun when the top round wouldn't compress a little. Could be the same sort of thing. If the problem is happening "loaded", try one less round in the magazine and see what that does.

(The springs in a brand-new gun may be a little stiff....)

Regards,

Welcome to the forum from Florida!

My mag release was pretty stiff when I first bought it but it loosened up rather quickly.

If its a new gun then I suspect is just need broke in a little. One thing to note is that if you are trying to release a magazine that is full or nearly full it will be much harder to release than an empty magazine. This is caused by the rounds pushing up against the bottom of the slide increasing the pressure between the magazine and magazine catch. A little oil in there wont hurt any too.

Welcome from Ohio

I use my pointer finger, from the other side. More leverage. Gotta love the ambidextrous releases.

If it doesn't loosen up you can always resort to the slingshot method.

Congrats on the new XD and welcome to the forum from Texas!
