New XD9 Owner in Utah

Hey guys, I was glad to find this forum.

I bought my first handgun- the XD9 over the weekend and have had a good time looking at it the last couple of days. I expect to get out for some shooting this weekend, when the real fun will begin. I have a couple of questions first.

1- The salesman told me there was some type of powder/pumice or something in the action to help break the gun in and might need to be removed after some time, he told me to read the manual and find out which kind it was. But after a careful reading of the manual, I couldn't find anything about it. Anyone have any idea what he might have been taking about?

2- I'm not sure how often I should be cleaning the gun. After so many rounds?

3- And finally, I have a fireproof Sentry Safe that I was planning on keeping it locked up in, but just found out they advise against keeping guns in them. I don't know if it's becasue the humidity or what, but now I need to figure out what to do. I'm thinking of getting a Pelican 1200 case (waterproof and airtight) to keep it in, and then store that inside the safe. Anyone tried this?

Thanks for your help, it's good to be a part of this community.

Welcome to the forum...

1. Never heard of this, I would suspect that he is full of it.

2. I would clean after everytime I shoot. If I shoot a few rounds, I do a light cleaning, if I shoot many rounds I do a more serious cleaning.

3. I don't know anything about this...

I don't know anything about this "powder." I also clean my gun after every time I go to the range. And, welcome, from just down the street.

Welcome to the forum from NC.

powerplaynow, you have a fine gun there. I would suggest that you take it back to the place of purchase and tell them that you'd like to purchase a cleaning kit and that you want a lesson in proper cleaning of the weapon that they sold you. The cleaning kit should not cost more than $20.00, unless you want a "bore-snake", which you may want to ask about and that will cost another $15 to $20. After you/they initially clean it, go shooting! I really takes very little time or effort to do. The XD is a "tactical" weapon and is made to take abuse and neglect in the field. It's better to take care and to lube it, but is capable of a lot of neglect. One shouldn't get into the habit of neglect though. You can find cleaning videos on YouTube like this and many more: YouTube - How To Lube An Auto Pistol
You will find yourself spending more time with the gun, the more time that you spend with it, the more time that you will want with it! It's addictive and your liable to find yourself spending money on accessories and special modifications (like trigger mods, or sights) that you don't truly need, but it makes your gun very special and it loves and responds well to this type of affection.

The Pelican case will not secure it from unattended juveniles, theft or fire. I initially put mine in a Sentry Safe that had floor mount bolts through it. I used some descant to keep the moister down. It worked just fine.

Good luck with your upcoming addiction, have fun!!
