Hello! This is my first post here. I just found this site, which is kind of funny considering how much research I did before I bought my new XD-9 this week. I'm sure I'll be a regular visitor going forward.
My story: I just started shooting a couple months ago. I'd shot a shotgun a couple times as a kid while hunting for rabbit with my dad and brothers, but hadn't fired another gun since then. A lot of my online motorcycling buddies shoot. It was something I was kind of interested in and seemed like a fun hobby so I decided to try it. Got a great deal on a P22 in December to get my feet wet. I really enjoyed shooting it (and still do), and decided to buy a .22 rifle with which to teach my wife and kids how to shoot, too. Bought an inexpensive but beautiful Romanian trainer at a local gun show a few weeks ago. I tried a 9mm during a range visit last month and decided to get one for myself. After seriously considering a half a dozen different models, I had pretty much decided on an XD-9, when instead I bought a S&W 4006, mostly because I liked the full stainless steel construction, the design, the ergonomics - and b/c I got a good deal on it. But it wasn't really what I wanted, plus I hate the idea of spending more for ammo since I'm just shooting at the range. I've heard all the arguments about calibers, but I'm just more comfortable with the 9mm, and the ammo is going to be cheaper for my weekly (or more often) range sessiosn. Plus I figure with a little less recoil, and with a lot of practice, God forbid I ever have to defend my family, my home and/or myself with my pistol, I'm going to be accurate enough with good ammo in my 9mm to put the bad guy down. I traded my 4006 for the XD-9 (4" model w/blued slide) at a local shop this week and have already put 100 rounds thru it. I have to say, it's exactly what I thought it would be and is a joy to shoot. I also bought the extra gear kit w/3 mags and 2-mag holder when I got the gun, as well as a set of snap caps for practicing trigger pull at home. I'm planning to take a CCW class and get my permit this spring. I'm not sure I'll carry often, but I'd like to have that option, plus I want the permit to avoid hassles when I ride (my Honda VFR) to the range, since I can't effectively separate the gun and ammo in my backpack. Better safe than sorry if I'm ever pulled over between home and the range with the gun and ammo on me. The permit will keep that from being an issue. BTW, other 9mms I seriously considered were the S&W MP and the new Ruger SR9. I like the Sigs, but they're more than I wanted to spend. I was this close to buying an SR9 this week, but when I got there to buy it I asked if they had an XD-9 in, which of course they did. They gave me a decent deal on it and since it was what I really wanted in the first place, I thought, "Why settle for the Ruger?" Not that the Ruger isn't a great handgun, too, but I had my heart set on the XD. Yep, I made the right choice!

Welcome to the forum from UT! Great choice. I have the XD45 service and will be adding the XD9 tactical soon so I can shoot more 9mm for the same cost of 45s.
