New from Alaska
Howdy everybody,
I'm livin' it up in South Central Alaska. I recently purchased an XD-45 for personal protection, but I realize that I have a lot to learn. I've used a pistol and am familiar with its usage and safety, but I don't know much about carrying for personal and family protection. I've tried to get in contact with the local gun club a few times, but they don't seem too intent on having new members or teaching, so I'll have to take it slow. Any advice would be helpful. In Alaska, no permit is required in most of the State (Anchorage is an exception, and possibly Fairbanks, depending on who you talk to). When I get the opportunity, I hope to actually get my permit however, since it is a good way to learn. I'd like to begin concealing, but the one or two times i've don so, I've been extremely nervous. When does this nervousness stop? When should I carry? Here is the question of questions, if I am confronted with a life-or-death situation, when should I draw my weapon, when should or would I fire, and what would be the consequences. Before I really begin carrying regularly, I have these, and more questions that need to be answered. Anyway, I'm glad to be here and hope to learn a lot from all y'all with considerably more experience than me. |

Welcome to the forum from UT. To address your concerns, I would suggest taking a concealed carry class. In Utah, the CCW class covers most of your concerns. The nervous feeling goes away as you become more confident carring your weapon with you.
You are only justified to use deadly force to prevent death or serious injury to yourself or family. Just a few odd thoughts on my part. Search the different forums and enjoy your XD. |

Welcome to the HS/XD funhouse. There are several of us from Alaska on the forum.
PS. The State told the boy Mayor of Anchorage "no no" to requiring permits. State Constitution prohibits anything more restrictive than State law. Not sure who you contacted about gun clubs...but I can help you out. We shoot both IDPA and USPSA matches at the Mat Valley Sportsman range in Palmer. MVS also has a Defensive Skills Handgun course they teach.

Thanks for the welcome.
R Dub Good to know that there are some fellow Alaskans that I can ask specific questions to. I live in Glennallen, so we're a bit away from Palmer, but we're there pretty often, so I'll check out MVS. Do you know anybody in the Copper River area? Thanks |
