XD disasembly
Hello all, this is my first post on this forum. I was directed her by a member from another forum I frequent. I have an XD 45 and am trying to do a detailed strip but I am having trouble. I am using the instructions foud here (http://www.xd-hs2000.com/disassembly/disassembly.html). I get through the step of removing the roll pin with out issue but can go no further. The instructions say that the firing pin should just slide right out, but mine does not. I seems to be stuck in that some how. It is almost like there is another pin holding it in or it is wedged in there. I don't want to force it for fear of braking somthing. Has anyone had any trouble with this, and/or can you give me some guidance on what I should do.
P.S. I have removed the roll pin comletely form the slide so it can not be getting hung up on it. Thank you in advance for any assistance you can give and I like this site so far, lots of good information.

Have you took out the cocked indicator? I know stupid question but you could have missed that part. turn the slide up and tap it with a rubber mallet, I had a issue getting mine out, But it was after about 2000 rounds and was really dirty

First, thanks for the welcome.
This is what I have done so far. Please let me know if I am missing something. I first remove the firing pin locking plate. Then I removed the Firing Pin Spring Guide, and Firing Pin Spring. Then I removed the Firing Pin Status Indicator. Then, I removed the roll pin by tapping it out toward the top of the slide. This is where the trouble starts. The instructions form the site I linked to in my original post say that at this point the firing pin sould just slide out, but for some reason mine just doesn't want to come out. I don't think that this could be a problem with a build up of residue as I only have between 5 and 7 hundred rounds through it at this point. It has been field striped and cleaned promptly after each outing. Again any sugestions would be greatly appreciated as i am at a loss for what to do.

mine took a little force BUT NO TOOLS it should come out by your hands also did you compleatly romove the pin or leave it part way in
so if you havent remove the pin all the way if you havent done that then apply some pressure and see if it comes out you could also spray some solvent into it. i dont know if this would help but if those dont work remove the pin in the bcak that holds the ejector and firing pin block in "make sure you have pressure on the firing pin block or it will fly off. let me know if you get it figured out or not by sending me a pm i might be able to come up with some other ideas if this doesnt work |

Well I finially got it out. It was just wedged in there. I ended up just lighting tapping it out and it came out pretty easily, I guess I just coulding get a good enough grip on it with my hands.
Thanks or all the suggestions.

I have a question.
How often should I completely break down my XDs for cleaning? Or would I be better off letting a smith do it? I field strip it after every range trip...but that's all I've ever done to them.

I would think the XD is simple enough for most people to "do it yourself" cleaning, a 'smith' is probably not needed for most. As far as a complete breakdown, obviously just disassemble as far as you are comfortable. The right tools (punch/rollpin punch/hammer) help a lot. Also good instructions or a DVD offer a piece of mind to not screw something up.
I like to keep my handguns really clean, so I always field strip it and clean/lube after any trip to the range. I will disassemble the slide into smaller components (take off slide plate and remove firing pin/spring, extractor, etc)...about every 1500 - 2500 rounds. Of course I usually shoot plinking ammo, so it's exceptionally dirty. By this point the firing pin channel is usuall pretty gummy kind of like tar. I'm sure many people here break their pistol down maybe once a year for a detailed cleaning. Others might do a complete breakdown after every range trip. Everyone is different. Like I said, I like a clean handgun, plus it's always good to stay familiar with your weapon. I don't know if the manual says anything, but 1500-2500 rounds has worked great so far, zero malfunctions in any of my 3 XD's.
