Welcome from yet another Dave!
For me, the service is no problem to conceal. I carry IWB at about the 1:30 position. The grip length is not the issue for me, it is the length of the gun. Now a 45ACP XD Sub-compact would interest me as a carry gun, but I have no real reason to dump my service for a compact. Now, that being said, if I were buying my first XD 45, I might just go with the compact. The shorter grip would be make concealment a little easier, and you can alway have a service size by swapping the magazine. Oh, and as far as the "Get Both" for the 9mm and 45ACP service pistols - I did!
