I'm a new member from Mississippi who just recently turned 21. I am looking into making my first handgun purchase this weekend at one of the biggest gun shows in the area. Now, as i'm sure you've guessed my being from Mississippi i'm no stranger to firearms. My first gun was given to me around the age of twelve. What has gotten me itching for a handgun is my stepfather and brother. My stepfather just converted his .357 glock to a .40S&W and i love it. My stepbrother has a 1911 replica that is a blast to shoot. I've narrowed my choices down to a Walther P22, a compact Smith and Wesson M&P .40S&W, or a Springfield Arms XD-.45 Tactical compact. The reason I am considering the P22 is I want to teach my girlfriend to shoot and ammo is cheap. At the moment i'm leaning towards the XD; as I'm sure that's what everyone here will suggest. Ok this is getting long for an intro thread(read:board at work).

there is nothing like the XD
get the 9mm hell of a lot cheaper then 45 but not as cheap as 22
if you get the 9 and decide to carry you wont need to buy a new gun
it was my first and i love it!

You've open up a can of worms here. You are going to get all kinds of opinions on what handgun is best now. A P22 will get you started for sure on teaching your girlfriend to shoot and to give yourself a LOT of practice without having to pay out lots of money for ammo. While it's OK to shoot a smaller caliber handgun to get your accuracy and practice in you'll want to have a larger caliber handgun around to practice with for home defense. "It also gives you an excuse to buy more guns." I taught my girlfriend to shoot her 9mm S&W and within 2 months she started talking about getting a 45. She found a S&W 457S that she really liked so I got it for her. Now I'm afraid to piss her off. I'm not sure what some of the others will post about this but I've found that I have to hold my Kimber 45 different than my XD 40 to consistantly hit the center of the target. It all come down to practice, practice, practice----and most of all HAVE FUN, and welcome to the group.

I'll tell you what most people will tell you. Pick up each one, and shoot them. Decide from there. If shooting them first isn't an option, go for the XD.

Thumbs up

Doesnt someone make a .22 conversion kit for the XD? If so, then you wouldnt need to purchase two guns and could still buy the 9mm XD

Welcome to the forum from UT. The joy of the firearms world is that there is no one gun that will satisfy all needs. I would get the gun that I wanted. A girl friend could be gone tonight and then you would be stuck looking at a gun that might remind you of the ex! Good luck and let us know what you decied on.

Welcome! Lots of good info here.

It's not a question of which to buy, it's a question of which to buy first.
