help for a newbie please
Hi, I am now just beggining my "training" for shooting. I am currently shooting with fellow poster "ABNO". It was my first time and I am extremely surprised with how much I enjoyed it. I would love to know more about guns, how they work, terminology and whatnot. If any of you have the time and patience to deal with my lack of knowledge any advice and guidance would be greatly appreciated. Hope all of your are having tons of fun as I did.

Welcome! This is typically a good site for beginners. There is a good mix of beginners and experienced members with a wider range of experience other than the XD. Ask about the "best" pistol for a use and you will get many suggestions rather than the XD which I see as a good test for (somewhat) impartial information.
Ask what you will and we will help. |

YAY fast response
Ok well awsome. thanks for the fast response...First i would love to know about what exactly the difference is between caliber has and what the mm shows on a gun...I'm also curious about a lot of the terminology and what the discription of a gun has to do with the gun itself...how it describes the caliber and all that. My fellow shooter AbNo was with me at the first time i shot one and he was constantly talking about them. Naturally i would like to be able to understand what he's talking about

Welcome to the forum from UT. This is a great place to ask questions but the best place to learn general firearm info is from your shooting buddy. Do not hesitate to ask your shooting friend a question or to post one here on the site. The firearms world is very diverse and people are passionate about thier belief or gun, but one size does not fit all. If that was so, there would be one gun with one bullet and we would all be happy.

I was in your shoes just 2 years ago. I was totally new to "real" guns. I had zero shooting experience (other than a BB pistol when I was a boy). I had no idea what all the acronyms meant.
You'll find a TON of info on this site alone. Plus there are plenty of other gun-related sites out there. Let Google become your guide, and your friend, too. Try the "search" function on this board and type in a few key words. And don't be afraid to ask questions! The only stupid question is the one you never ask. What would maybe help you is to find local shooters in your area and start "hanging out" with them and asking questions, watching, etc...

This thread has a short, quick discussion of calibers v mm - enough to get you the basic concepts Caliber Question
Here's a link to give you about any abbreviation you are going to see for ammunition types: http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/WebAr...sp?Meida_id=17 And here's a link to a gun dictionary for common terms you'll come across: http://www.boomershoot.org/general/GunDict.htm As you come across other terminology, just ask and someone will be happy to fill you in on what stuff is or direct you to a site/thread to read up on the topic. Oh, and welcome to the forum.
