Checking In From Iowa
Hey all. I just picked up my first real personal handgun and I decided to see what it's all about and who else is on the team. It's a Springfield XD .45 acp tactical. It is also a serious handful of responsability. I'm already looking at some training options, and of course, I have been fiddling with it, safely. That is, I've been rocking the slide, checking the release, checking draw, and looking the pistol over, and getting the safeties into my bean, while unloaded. I have noticed that the trigger pull is quite mild, I've been considering seeing if I can't jump that to 12 lb, but I will hold off on that until I've put a dozen dozen, that's gross, rounds downrange and see if training helps as well.
I am excited about being a new owner of a genuine self-defense pistol. I am more interested in just target shooting and supporting the social and political nature of gun ownership, but perhaps that is because as a guy who tries to be a good guy, I don't always want to have to think about "what if". It can be a cold hard world and our brothers and sisters aren't always even as 'kind' as the world. As well, there is always the boy-like fascination with mechanical operations, loud sounds, and heavy metal (and plastics). I still haven't given up on it as a conceal carry. At 6'4" and 270-300, I have some room to play. If anyone uses this pistol as carry, I would be interested in what holster rig(s) you go with. I am pretty sure I want a shoulder holster and a variable pitch belt or paddle holster (allowing for cross, mob, and various strong side draws). And I am pretty sure I want either a thumb break or security holster. Leather is nice, but not required. And, yes, I have been looking. I can't say I have even found one for the tactical. Some sites invite a call, but don't list particular pistols. Oh, and I'm not going to pay $300, especially if there is a functional rig for $50 that also passes my visuals and functional muster. Not much interesting about me. I like computers, though I'm more of a consumer and minor tech. I'm half-way through an engineering degree, but that is on medical hold (high blood pressure meds just wipe me out, we are working on it). I enjoy the heck out of life, even when I'm too tired to do much about it. And my dratted laundry is done, see ya. |

Welcome to the forum. Is there any particular reason that you want a 12# trigger? I dropped mine down to 4#. Everyone has their own preferences I guess. |

Welcome to the forum. The XD 45 is a great choice. I have the 45 Service model and it is first a defensive handgun (legally goes everywhere with me) and a plinking gun when I am tired of 22 caliber holes in targets!

Thanks for the welcome all! It's good to be in, if cyber, happy shooting land. I didn't even have to die to get here.
Why a 12#? The trigger is so Light! I thought it would take a little to work the trigger, but not to me. Although, after reading through some threads here, I think training might cover that. I've been keeping the XD close by and just practicing handling it with my finger going to the side of the pistol. And, when I went to the range, I kept doing that. I would take a few shots, then put my trigger finger out, then restart my aim and shoot process. I'm still a little nervous about the perceived lightness of the trigger. It's a wait and see thing, at this point, but it just seems to be a very light pull. Last edited by Doomd : 05-07-2007 at 07:01 PM. |
