Introduction

Good morning all. Since I recently acquired an XD45 service model (4") I thought I'd check in on your board. Some of you may have seen me around on THR and TFL.

So far I'm very impressed. I didn't set out to buy one, but ran across a smoking deal that I just couldn't pass up. Suddenly I find myself contemplating selling my beloved SIG P220A.

Now if I could only figure out how the heck I'm supposed to change out the recoil spring ...

Welcome, Bryan. As an owner of an XD45 Service I recommend you run several hundred rounds through your pistol before you decide to change your recoil spring. I have found that the stock spring and guide work well for me. What is your reason for wanting to change it?
Following a few months of familiarization I decided to send my XD to Canyon Creek. They dropped my trigger pull from 6.5# to 4.0#, took up some travel, polished the feed ramp, and installed TruGlo TFO sights. I was happy with it before and even more so now. Be sure you have decide on the primary purpose for your pistol before you start tweaking it. Each shooter has his/her own preferences. If I can be of further assistance, let me hear from you.

Actually I have no desire to change it now. It functions beautifully. But I would like to know HOW to change it when the time comes. I can't see how it comes off the guide rod. Or do I simply have to order an entire replacement plastic (excuse me, polymer ) guide rod assembly complete with the double spring arrangement pre-installed?

The only change/addition I could see myself making to this would be a light and/or laser for the rail.

I lucked into this pistol for $300 cash, and am exceptionally pleased with it.

You can get a replacement guide rod here.

https://www.pistolgear.com/products.php?id=8

This also allows changing the spring rate as well.

Welcome to the site. I put about 500 rounds through my XD 45 before changing the guide rod but have kept the stock spring and I am well satisfied.

Thanks all for the welcome.

As I said, I'm perfectly pleased with the stock guide rod and spring. It's just that I was looking at it and I can't figure out how you separate the spring(s) from the rod itself in order to change them out when the time does inevitably come. Ah well. No big deal.

you replace the whole assenbly. you can buy one from Springfield for about $15 plus shipping. I had a problem with mine. I called springfield and said it was broke. they sent me a replacement for free and I ordered a spare. Then I got the original back in order. I retired the original to the spares box. The recoil spring problem was my fault not theirs.
