New job = new XD!
Greetings everyone, looks like a fine community you have here! I just wanted to drop by and introduce myself, since I'm going to be an XD owner within a day or two. A quick little bio here - my name is JB Walters, I've been in the USAF for six years; I'm a Staff Sergeant. I'm no stranger to firearms, although I'm no expert either. I've shot in a couple of USPSA matches, but nothing too fancy on the competitve end...I'm mostly LE oriented. I'm from Ohio originally. I grew up near Toledo, although I'm living in the Denver, CO area now.
I was recently hired onto the Castle Pines Emergency Services department in Castle Rock, CO. The job requires a duty sidearm, which the department doesnt supply, so I'm going in tomorrow and picking up an XD40 (which I am HIGHLY excited about...I've wanted one for a long time, but could never justify the purchase to my wife...now I have a reason!). I'll post pics when I pick it up, of course. I do have a couple of questions though. For those of you that own both the service model and/or the tactical, and have had a chance to compare the two at the range, do you notice a substantial increase in accuracy with the 5" barrel over the 4"? I personally like the 4" service model a little better as far as appearances go, but this will be a duty gun - gotta put the bullets in the bad guys (should the need arise), looks be damned. Any thoughts/opinions/suggestions as to which one I should go with? As for upgrades....I'm a tweaker by nature, I can't help it. Cars, guns, whatever...I modify stuff. I've been reading a little about trigger jobs from canyon creek, different guide rods/springs, mag extensions and magwells, etc...does anyone have some recommendations to maximize the XD40 as a duty weapon? I dont want a match gun, just something optomized for police use. If you think I should leave well enough alone, thats fine too. The XD looks plently capable in stock trim, so I'm not going to get my feelings hurt if you guys tell me I shouldn't mess with it. Anyway, sorry for the long intro - but I'm sure you'll be seeing more of me on the forums once I get my hands on the gun (I'm sure I'll have some questions). Thanks in advance for your replies! |

I am also in denver and I also work for CPGC so I wish you luck getting through the snow to go shopping. Be sure to stop by "Daves" on parker rd.
My preference would be the 5" if it is only for duty carry.

Congrats on the new purchase! By the way, since you have to purchase your own sidearm for work, YOUR XD-40 IS A TAX DEDUCTION!!
I also own a XD-40. I chose the Service because it is more accurate than I am and I can carry and draw it easier than a Tactical. As far as modifications go I would suggest a Don's Guide Rod and spring for added reliability. I left the trigger alone on mine and have no problem getting controlled shots of in a rapid manner. If I change anything else I'm gonna get some new sights for easier viewing in low light. I haven't decided what to get though.

Hello CPES - Welcome to the site. I too am a new XD owner and am really stoked about the new addition. I don't know much about any mods to the XDs because all other polymer pistols I own are Glocks. However, one thing to consider is that you may want to check with your supervisor or employers attorney about modding a duty weapon. This is due to the fact that if you do have to use lethal force it could open a can of worms using a "modified weapon" in the courts eyes. Not trying to be a killjoy as I am new around here but in the sue happy country we live in today you can't be to careful.

Welcome, JB! Glad to have you join us. I have the XD45 Service which I sent to Canyon Creek for (1) a trigger job (6.5# to 4.0#), (2) to have the feed ramp polished, and (3) to have TruGlo TFO sights installed. I, too, like to tinker with cars, guns, etc. I think langford2000's advice is worth looking into. Potential liability could be an issue.

Practice, Practice, Practice. I am more accurate with a 5", but then that is what I would expect of most new shooters. A friend picked up my XD40 Service (4") and shot it very well the first time.
A DGR and a little trigger work would be nice. That is what my XD40 has. Either way you will do well. Tax deduction? Miscellaneous Itemized Deduction subject to 2% of your AGI. Unless you have more of them you probably won't get any deduction. As far as naming it and claiming it as dependent I think we should all be able to do that the way they eat ammo and live under our roof. Some even take their XD with them where every they go! Be safe in the new job.
