Just wanted to introduce myself to all of you on this forum. My name is Duncan and I have just purchased an XD9 Tactical in olive drab. It is barely used; less than 500 rounds through it. It should arrive in the next week or two and I'm stoked about it as this is my first handgun purchase. It was reading information in posts on this sight that led me to buy the XD, along with countless reviews that all say that this is a fine handgun. It just may be the only handgun I ever buy so I decided to go with one that by all accounts is virtually 'indestructable'. I can't say it's the prettiest gun around, but its beauty is in its features and reliability. So anyway, thanks for taking the time to read this and I'll be talking to you all on the board. Of interest to American members: the Tactical model is the only one available in Canada due to barrel length restrictions limiting barrels to at least 4.5 inches. That's ok with me, because that's the one I wanted anyway. - D

Welcome! You have a great gun and have found a great place to discuss that weapon with others. Look forward to seeing you post in the future.

Welcome! Be sure to give us a range report when you get it.

Oh, and feel free to let us in on the ins and outs of the shooting sports in Canada. Laws, practices, ranges and such.

In Canada, there are very few circumstances that you can legally carry a handgun. Basically, unless you are a police officer or have a permit to carry in the bush (like a prospector or surveyor) then you can't carry. You have to get a transfer permit which allows you to take the gun to and from a registered range. All handguns are registered and have been for decades. The last Liberal government that we finally voted out tried to make everyone register their rifles and shotguns as well, but that turned into a way for them to waste hundreds of millions of taxpayers' dollars for zero return. The program was a complete failure due to a general lack of compliance by gun owners and complete ineptitude on the part of the bureaucrats. The latest Conservative government has put the registry on hold, realizing that it does nothing to curb gun crimes, as hunting rifles and shotguns are rarely used in crimes anyway, and criminals certainly won't go to the trouble of registering their gun before they hold up the corner 7-11. Due to pressures from the urban left-wing, the Liberals and New Democrats have been trying to act tough on crime by criminalizing legitimate law-abiding citizens who happen to own guns while criminals roam the streets with weapons that are illegally brought in from south of the border; probably in trade for our potent and plentiful marijuana, which you Americans can't seem to get enough of . I could go on like this, but in short, it is not easy to be a gun owner in Canada. It seems that they keep adding more and more red tape and regulations to make it so that it is just too much of a bureaucratic nightmare for many people to bother with. I am hoping that we don't have another kneejerk reaction to this latest Montreal college shooting, as if more gun laws could possibly prevent a psycho like that guy from doing what he did. I don't have a problem with having to have a licence to purchase and own guns. If I have to have a licence to drive a car then it's not unreasonable to have a licence to own a gun I suppose. It just seems that our governments feel that I should just sit at home in fear, and pray that when some junkie busts into my home with a weapon and tries to rob and assault my family, our underfunded police force will come to my rescue. Thanks, but I'll take care of things myself. I don't think I would carry even if it was legal here, but I do think it's a good idea to have one in the house, and so far it's still legal to do that. As gun owners in America, you definately are given a lot more lee-way than we are here in Canada.
