XD in the field?
I am a new XD owner, 2 weeks ago I got an XD 45acp Service as a birthday present from my wife (the greatest wife ever)! I have put about 300 rounds through it and its shooting great. This november I plan on carrying it while deer hunting as a back-up for finishing shots. I generaly make very good shots but things happen and I feel way more comfortable using a handgun at point blank than my 270. Anyway has any one had any experience using a 45acp on deer (XD or not), does it have the knock down power in case I want to make an initial shot with it? And if so what ammo?

I have not with a .45 ACP. I carry a S&W 686 6" 357 Mag when hunting. I don't think I would take my first shot with a .45 ACP or my 357 Mag unless the deer was really close or rifle had a problem. When I hunt it's for food so I try very hard to shoot only once and take the animal down quick.
I have finished off a friends elk with the 357 Mag and was shooting Winchester 158 Gr HP Silver Tips one shot. I still have the box with 49 rnds in it. I'm sure a .45 ACP would take down a deer or finish one off. Just not sure if you want to be tracking in for the next several hours if you have a non critical hit for a first shot.

Thanks for the reply. Those were my thoughts, I would NEVER take a shot I wasnt sure of(over 20 yards) with my .45, but it would be cool to take large game with it. My only other handgun is a .44 black powder revolver with a 12in. barrel, its reserved for muzzel loading season and is a pain to clean for only one shot. Well I guess I need to buy a magnum.....any thoughts on wich to buy, I've been eyeing the S&W .460XVR but its HUGE(thats what I like about it
