You got WHAT for a first gun?
That's right! After 2 months of online research, buying way too many magazines (the paper kind), and talking to friends and LGS's, I decided to by the XDS as a first gun. I knew it probably wasn't the best choice for a first handgun, but I also knew that's where I would eventually end up!

When I brought it home, my wife rolled her eyes and politely asked if she could throw away all the magazines now. (No!) I aimed at all the bad guys on TV. I aimed at the cat. (I never aimed at the dogs!) (I don't like the cat much!) I kept it next to me everywhere in the house. I even kept it next to me in bed! And I hadn't even loaded it yet!

After 3 weeks of getting the feel for it, learning how to field strip it, finding a cleaning kit, and scrounging up enough ammo to make it worthwhile to go to the range, I got to shoot it! After the 2nd magazine I looked at my wife and said, "I am the MAN!"

Anyway, I found this forum (and damn glad of it!) and hope to learn as much as I can about the XDS and handguns in general.

Congrats and welcome. I just went out today and threw 100 rounds thru my XDs.

But might I suggest a handgun safety course?

Why wouldn't it be a good choice for a 1st gun?? Learn as much as you can and enjoy! You picked a fine firearm for your 1st gun purchase imo.

Never point a firearm at something you do not intent to destroy. Loaded or unloaded.

Anyways, welcome to the forum. Sign up for some training, and learn some proper handling of that firearm. It is not a toy, but a serious tool.

Wow, it took you three weeks to get to the range. Bummer! I suspect ammo is slim in your parts as well? Congrats...

OK, yes I'm kidding about aiming it at the TV and the cat! (well, maybe not the cat!) But, my wife thinks there's something going on between me and the XDS!

These are rules to live by! Your post made me cringe! ND's happen more often than you think, even to people who have been around guns their entire life! Please treat your new gun as a weapon, not a toy!
