From Montana
I've spent a LOT of time lurking and reading the outstanding posts from the very knowledgeable members here. Now I suppose it's time to join up.
I'm a first time gun owner, and just purchased the XD40 4". I bought the weapon for personal protection, as I live near some undesirable neighborhoods replete with stung-out meth addicts. My roommate and I have had some undesirables approach the house and one time, a guy that had just gotten beat up (and had no shirt on and was bloodied) came to the door and demanded a shirt from my roommate. I wasn't there at the time, but that was the last f'ing straw man.
So after talking with a few people and doing some research on my own, I "settled" on the XD40 for a home protection weapon and range pistol. It's been very reliable for me so far, except when I used some cheap Russian ammo. It jammed twice on me in one clip. I went back to the Winchester white box FMJ 165gr target ammo and haven't had any issues since.
A good friend of mine whom is knowledgeable about pistols and gun safety has been a great asset for me. His knowledge about guns, combined with what I've learned here, has been great for my learning.
I've shot guns before, but only rifles (30-06, 308 etc). But I'm in the unique position in that I'm a blank slate and can learn properly from scratch (without having to overcome already-learned bad habits). So this site is going to be a tremendous resource for me and my personal protection.
Anyway, that's my story. Glad to be here.

Welcome from WV. With the neighborhood you live in, I might have taken the money you spent on the gun and tried to move, LOL. But anyways welcome to the club. m

Welcome from Idaho! I used to live in Harlowton, MT. Unfortunately the meth problem has even got up there to the last best place.
