Hey everyone! I've been checking this forum everyday for the last two weeks and figured its about time to speak up with some questions. I've never owned any firearms before, and I've been to the range 4 times over the course of my 35 years and always really enjoyed shooting. My wife has always been nervous about guns, but i was able to convince her to come with me to Sunset Hill in Pennsylvania where they rent a wide variety of firearms. She was SUPER nervous, and they have a large caliber sniper rifle there which was much louder than any of the other guns which was, unfortunately for her, by far the most popular. She would literally jump every time someone shot it. I was pretty surprised by this as she's a really tough nut most of the time, she's got a couple hundred skydives, she likes to climb and motorcycle and she's a great shot with a bow, so I figured this would totally be something she loved, but she wanted to go to the car and wait before we had been on the range for even 2 minutes. She was about to leave when one of the instructors walked up and started talking to us. He was really nice, and very calming. He took a .22 as far down the range away from the sniper rifle as possible, and when she was still apprehensive, he gently talked her into just sitting down and holding the rifle. He told her to take her time, sight everything out and take one or two shots on him. If she liked, she could continue, and if not to just gently set the gun down, no harm done, no cost to us. Well, she just never stopped.

The first 10 shots all hit their mark, and 9 of the next 10 with a .22 pistol were all on target as well, turns out she's a natural, hahaha. She didn't shoot anything else that day, but after going home and soaking it all in, she wants to go back and try something a little bigger.
That brings me to the XD and how I got here. A gun that I had always wanted to shoot was the .45 1911 and I had pretty much made a beeline for the Springfield when I got there. My grouping was not bad (from about 10 yards) on my first try, and when I told the instructor how much I liked it, he asked if I wanted to try the XD .45. At first I was like, Nah, because I had really only wanted to shoot the 1911 and then shoot some trap, but then I reconsidered with a quick "What the hell, why not?" Well, as you probably know, that gun changed my life. I was 5 in a row in the bullseye from the same distance and the gun just felt great. I also shot some trap with a Mossberg Defender pump 12 gauge which was alot of fun, but the XD really was the star of the day for me.
So, here we are back in NJ, and considering becoming gun owners. I sent an email to Guns For Hire who does safety classes at The Bullethole in Belleville and am waiting to hear back from them about class content and whats involved. Just thought I'd shout out to you guys and girls and see if you have any recommendations of books we could read or places to find good information, books, other classes, etc. (besides this forum

) we'd really appreciate it.
She wants to shoot something bigger, I'm hoping to find something we could share...maybe an XD 9mm?

We'll have to go back to the range to find out.
