Need suggestions; An epoxy for high heat, high vibration.
Recently purchased my first 4-wheeler. 2009 Yamaha YFZ 450r. Like it a lot. Anyway there is a short portion of exhaust pipe exposed. It's right behind the rider's right knee. I'm trying to come up with a shield to mount there and have an idea to start with.
Using two worm clamps. Welding a metal plate to the clamps. Then using epoxy to cover the metal plate with hard plastic. I'm hoping the plastic ends up being spaced away from the actual pipe for air to pass and keep from melting the plastic.
Also need to research types of plastic but want to get suggestions for epoxy first.
Thanx
Chris

Epoxy, heat, and exhaust are a bad combo.
I know somebody that tried to JB weld their dirt bike exhaust back together. They inhaled the resulting fumes, and wound up in the hospital. I'd go for that stuff they use to wrap headers, or rivet some of that fireplace heat shield stuff to your proposed metal plate/hose clamp idea. Or just keep your knee off the exhaust.

most epoxies are only good up to 280 degrees. We use northerns epoxy to repair aluminum radiators at the shop i work at. how about doing a stainless sheild thats silver soldered on? ive made one for my cafe racer when i put resets on the bike my ankle always touched the exhaust, worked out great.

Yea I think I'm past the epoxy idea. I did buy a piece of stainless expanded metal. And have a couple pipe hanger clamps. So the plan is to form the stainless into shape and bolt to these clamps. (I'll try finding a pic online). This should keep body parts off the metal while still allowing air to flow.
I will take temp readings to see how high temps get.
