My car started making noise, any ideas as to cause?
I have a 2003 Ford Escape V6 with about 115,000 miles on it. Recently it started making a clicking sound upon start-up. It starts out fairly loud and gets quieter the longer it runs and after about 5min the sound goes away entirely. It speeds up when I give it gas or start driving. It sounds alot like if you were to put a playing card in the spokes of a bicycle wheel.
It sounds like its coming from toward the front of the engine compartment. I couldn't see anything rubbing anywhere, but I may have just missed it...
When it first started I only noticed the noise when it started cold until It warmed up. Now it clicks after sitting for any amount of time, and even from a warm start (sitting for less than 30min)
Anyone have any ideas of whats causing it and how to stop it? I can fix pretty much anything, I just have to know whats broke...

I probably should take a closer look at that...I haven't due to the fact that the sound does eventually stop, which doesn't make sense to me if its the fan...

I just did some quick reading about what a CV joint is, would this make noise regardless whether the car is in park, or moving?

light clicking sound that is engine speed driven could be a lifter clacking
sounds like a tick tick tick tick noise
If it becomes a clunk clunk clunk sound that's not good
CV shaft will only click in movement...it will be much more noticeable in a slow turn from a stop

I haven't owned a FWD only vehicle in 30 years..
I think is was my 80 Honda Accord..
Mostly RWD and a couple 4WD since then..
It would make sense that the CV joint would make noise starting and slower speeds and then just go with the flow at higher speeds.
As far as while parked I don't know.
If you can access them you might try grabbing and shaking to see if the little u-joints are loose.
I'm no mechanic.
That was just my guess to what it might be..
Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will chime in...

The electric fans start and stop as required.

Any way to diagnose if this is the case, or fix it?

The problem is the lifter and rocker arms loose their tolerances...that tick tick tick is the rocker arm hitting the lifter or valve stem as then engine heats up and the metal expands it closes back up the tolerances (its a very common adjustment on air cooled engines [just ask a VW owner])
Better to know what and where the noise is coming from before tearing into the engine!! I could be as simple as a small pebble stuck in the serpentine
What weight motor oil do you use?
