I don’t think ticking valves would be as loud as the OP describes it. Since he says it sounds like a card in a bicycle spoke, to me sounds like something is making contact upon revolutions.
Something in your engine bay has to be hitting your fan, or belt or anything of the sort.

Does this model use a continuous, sinuous drive belt?
Check condition of belt -- the replacement schedule is about 80,000 miles.

My wife's Envoy does something like this...it's the electronic clutch fan on her's. GM says once the original is replaced there is no fix for it...crank the car...click, click, click, click for about a minute.
GM and local mechanic says it won't hurt anything, just annoying. New cars are a real pain.

Sounds like slop in the lifters or valve lash needs to be adjusted. But you said the front. Does it have a timing chain or a belt? Could be a guid inside the timing cover came loose or worn out. Take a loong screwdriver. Use it like a stethoscope. Grab the handle with about one or two fingers hanging off the end. Put that to ur ear and the tip of the screwdriver against different parts of the engine. You can usually find the spot where the knocking is coming from. I would start at the valve cover toward the back and work ur way to the front. Hit up the timing cover. Even the alternator . Bearings go bad in them and can cause this noise also. Good luck..

As have been said. If its coming from the top side it can be fixed . If its coming from the bottom like from the oil pan then it usually means trouble. But thats normally a thunk than a tick. Here's an idea. Hit up some Ford Escape forums. Someone has had this problem before I'm sure and that can help narrow it down faster. When I've had odd stuff come up on a car that I can't figure out this usually points me in the right direction.

Take the plastic cover off the engine. On the Right if yo are standing in front of the truck there is a small pulley for the water pump that is a known failure part on those engines. The cover traps the heats and the bearing in the pulley go bad. It is the smaller pulley shown here. This is m ost likely the source of the noise.

a ford escape should have non adjustable lifters a cv axle only clicks while turning no matter the speed they are quiet in a straight line and an electric fan doesnt come on unless the car is up to temp or the ac pressures require it and the compressor doesnt engage until the car is actually running. never heard a waterpump make a ticking sound. the bearings make a grinding growling sound. take it to someone who knows what they are doing before you cost yourself more money than you need to. could be the ac compressors reed valves making noise at start up. only a professional who is actually looking and listening to it can tell you whats wrong

You can purchase a mechanic's stethoscope or use a long screwdriver or extension to listen for this noise and pinpoint its origin.
With hydraulic lifters, you are not adjusting lifters when you make a valve train adjustment, you are adjusting valve lash. But since the lifters are in this operation this is how it is usually, although incorrectly, referred to.
I used to own a 1987 ford ranger with a 2.9, you want to talk about a ticking sound, WOW.
I would be leaning more towards the pulley bearing failing in this situation. A little probing with a stethescope would confirm it. Might also check the belt tensioner.

Just some info for you, if your engine is the v6 its a dual overhead cam chain driven with hydraulic lifters with no adjustment, you could have a lifter that bleeds down causing noise and takes a few to build back up pressure and remove lash. If you can take a video or record sound and post that would help a lot.
