Scope and scope mount issues on M1A's are often an issue/big deal and sometimes folks seem to spend a lot of money trying to find what works best for them.

The usual recommended mounts can be expensive (as well as the scopes).

I've had a scope on mine over 30 years with no issues (maybe I'm lucky).

A mounted scope (on an M1A) is way high up in the air (to clear the back sights). This usually results in problems getting consistent cheek welds when shooting or changing positions while shooting. I finally put a riser (strap on vs. screwed on) on my stock to help.

Based on experience with my M1 Garand if I were scoping an M1A today I'd go with a scout scope mount and long eye relief scope like my M1 Garand wears. I put an Ameaga Ranges scope mount on it (takes the place of the lower handguard and clamps around the barrel with multiple screws and tenstion screws) and 2X8 pistol scope on it. The scope is mounted much lower out there on the barrel and does not interfere with top loading or ejection. With some brands of ammo (SA surplus) I get regular feed issues caused by an empty case bouncing off the scope mount and back into the way of the bolt as it loads then next round. No other surplus or my reloads do this but the issue is bad enough with SA surplus that I've given all mine to my youngest son for his M1A (his works just fine with it).

I've shot my M1 Garand (with that scope mount/scope) out to 400 yds. with no issues. It shoots well enough that I've had people walk up and ask if its a "match" rifle or if it has a "match" barrel on it. Its just a good shooting M1 Garand that I shoot well because the scope helps my old eyes out.

There are other companies that make scout scope mounts for the M1A besides Ameaga Ranges but that is the one I bought and I struggle to remember the name of the other company.

Good luck with yours, whichever way you go.

Really like that stock, almost looks like a tiger strip pattern or something.

You can get kits from CMP for a fairly good price, I've got a bookfield type score mount on mine and love it, I need a cheek raiser though.

Very cool! My father carried one in Vietnam. I'd love to own one.

Mine is an H&R also. I have a Springfield receiver, but the rest is all H&R. I gathered the parts from gun shows and off the internet for a couple of years before the build. I really love this rifle. It makes a great companion to my H&R Garand.
