looking for 200yrd range in Illinois

Hi,

Anyone know of a 200 yrd range in Illinois that allows public use? I have a new FNAR I want to sight in at 200yrds.

I think ISRA has a nice rifle range, but its about $300 a year to join.

Have you considered using a 100 yard range and sighting in 2 1/2" high? Thats how we do it around where I live. Use the balistic charts in your reloading manual and it will tell exactly how high to sight your gun in using the information you can look up. Cal, bullet weight, and velosity. It's all printed out in the book. If you don't have a book, provide the information with a post and I will look it up for you. It works, it's easy and it's accurate.

Hi,

I guess that could work too.

Let me officially adjust my question, "Anyone know of a 100 yrd range in Illinois that allows public use? I have a new FNAR I want to sight in at 200yrds."

I bought some Remington 150 grain FMJ .308 win and Hornady 150 grain SST interlock .308 win.

I'm zeroing an FN FNAR 7.62x51mm heavy 20" barrel.

Scope is a RedField revolution 3-9x50 and is about 2.25" from center of scope to center of barrel.

I think that should cover it.

HORNADY AMMUNITION BALLISTICS

Am I reading this correct for the 308 sst interlock, it's 1.8" high at 100yrd to zero at 200yrd?

Would my scope mounts play into the amount high?

Thanks,
- Mike

Using the chart furnished: They are using scope height of 1 1/2" and hitting 100 yards at 1 1/2" high. You are correct. Your scope being 2 1/4 will make a minor varriation but not much. I would guess your true 200 yard zero would impact the 100 yard target about 1/8 to 1/4" lower or 1 3/8" to 1 7/16 at @ 100 yards. However if you use the 1 1/2 you will be OK at 200 impacting 1/4 to 1/2" higher than true zero. I wouldn't worry about that small difference. Better high than low IMO.

Hi,

Thank you. I'll use your suggestion of 1.5" high and 100yrd then. Now all I need is a range to zero it at. I'm hoping OPSC | Oak Park Sportsmen's Club will let me use their range. They are a private club about 10 minutes from me.

Mike, I have 1 adjustment to make from the Hornady chart. Upon reviewing the chart I just noticed Hornady is offering 2 different loads of 150 gr SST. One is the custom @ 2820 fps and the other is a Light Mag listed @ 3000 fps. I was using information for the light mag @ 1.5" high at 100. You were looking at the Custom load @ 2820 fps listed at he number you quoted @ 1.8" high. So use the numbers for whichever ammo you are shooting. I didn't realize they offered 2 loads of the same bullet. The slower 1 will need to be sighted slightly higher at 1.8 Good Luck, you are good to go.

Hi,

Thanks for clarifying. Yes, I'm using the slower SST interlock. I thought maybe you were making some adjustment for my scope mount. I'll use the 1.8" then.

Thanks,
Mike

OPSC is closed to members only. The use of the rifle range is restricted to those members who took the required safety overview class.
