Charles Daley Feld 1911 Questions

I need your input on an issue I am having with my CD 1911.

I have had a few issues with the gun failing to go into battery. I was using the factory mags & factory FMJ ammo.

I originally thought it maybe the magazines that are supplied with the gun, they are factory Armscor magazines, so I tried some SA magazines and I had maybe one failure with those.

Then I decided to get some emory cloth and polish the ramp, I could see tool marks, which I was able to smooth out. Upon further inspection I noticed that the feed ramp from the frame did not match up with the champher on the barrel. There was about a 1/32 mismatch between the two with the frame feed ramp being the area that was not mating to the barrel. I also chambered a few rounds and examined the bullets after being ejected, I was scoring the bullet as it chambered.

I called CD customer service and asked them about it and they agreed to have me send the gun in for repair. They called yesterday and asked me to send them the magazines for the gun, which doesn't make sense to me, but I did.

It seems to me that there should be a tolerance for the feed ramps match up, and that the gun should be able to be checked with any magazine, I'm more concerned about the mismatch then the magazines.

Can anybody help me with what I should be looking for in the way the barrel and frame feed ramps mate.

PS: I have a taurus PT1911 SS that is dead flush, and my SA LW Champion Operator uses a bull barrel, and the feed ramp is all part of the barrel.

On my Kimber the feed ramps line up perfectly, on my Springer not so much but both are reliable and accurate so I wont mess with the Springer. I had one of the early CD 1911's and it had issues I polished the feed ramp with a dremmel tool and the light polishing compound on the felt bullet shaped polishing wheel then replaced the mags with McCormic shooting stars but it was still having issues untill I went with a Nowlin variable rate recoil spring and full length guide rod then it was great. With the Armscorp pistols you get a fair pistol that might need a little tinkering to get right. With any FTF now I immediately check extractor tension first, then Magazines, then recoil springs, then feed ramp.

Thanks bigun, now a more basic question. How do you check the extractor tension?

I have ordered 6 Chip McCormick Power Magazines, that should be here in a week.

Remove the slide and insert a round under the extractor, it should hold the round loosely, if it is too tight there will be no movement of the round if you shake it, too loose the round will fall out. I've found when it comes to 1911 function it's better to be a little on the loose side than too tight. That is probably the one and only time you'll ever hear a statement like that and not laugh
