Another Shoulder Holster Question
I have a shoulder holster question for a compact 1911 as well, and I didn't want to thread jack the other guy. My brother and I both recently bought compact 1911 and we were looking at the Galco shoulder systems(the miami and the jackass system). My question is this: Can anybody give me some pros and cons to having a vertical system versus the horizontal Miami classic? I've never worn a shoulder holster yet, so I figured I'd see what you guys thought.

Verticle or horizontal
I have both horizontal and vertical shoulder holsters. I prefer horizontal because I think it offers a faster presentation of the weapon. My vertical shoulder holster makes for a slower presentation, but it is more concealable if your jacket is long enough. For what it is worth, I carry Springfield Champions. If I carried a fullsize 1911, I'd probably favor vertical carry just because of my size. I can't carry a full size 1911 horizontally.

I've tried them both out. Hated the vertical holster. That's really only for something like a magnum revolver with a huge barrel and scope. Horizontal holsters offer faster presentation like GOldie49 said. Given that cross draw shoulder holster already is not the fastest way to present a pistol, a vertical holster just makes it that much worse. Of course, if you plan on carrying a full size Government 1911, a veritcal holster may be a better bet unless you're the size of a bear. I can only hide the commander and officers model with a horizontal holster.

I have three shoulder holsters. One vertical, one drop out vertical, and one horizontal.
The horizontal is best for the 1911 in my opinion. My dropout holster is for a Snub nose Detective Special and it is great for that. The full size vertical is slow, very slow. I am the size of a bear so it works for me. |
