The Springfield 1911's have been a little tough to find lately. My favorite shop tells me that Springfield has been concentrating on the XD... but those are made elsewhere so I don't see how that could make a difference. I was looking for a Loaded Champion or Ultra model, but jumped on a Micro Compact Operator when I found a new one at the shop. Finding used can also be a little tough, doesn't seem that people want to let them go. They're out there... just have to be patient and keep looking.

Its probably because of rumors in the M1911 circles that the Kimber's are having some problems. Usually regarding breaking down and taking time to send it back, get fixed, and returned.
I don't have a M1911, but I'm thinking of getting it next. Same here, looking for a SA M1911 in Olive Drab or Parkerized.

I bought my stainless Springfield Loaded 1911 from Gilberts Guns (which is a forum sponsor) a few months back. Haven't looked on their site in a while, but it might be worth checking them out.

GilbertsGuns.com - Federal XM193 223 Ammunition, Truglo TFO Night Sights, Saiga High Capacity Magazines

*Edit- Just looked and they have 4 Springfield 1911 models in stock!

That might have something to do with it. The Kimber reliability and customer service rumors led me to choose my Loaded Springfield over a comparable Kimber SIS model (both 3" compact models). I've also had good past experience with Springfield customer service when I did have a problem. That being said, I have no first hand experience with Kimber.

I was looking at the Kimber site a few weeks back and the descriptions of their alloy frames say something like "no noticeable wear after 20,000 rounds." To some that may be a lot, but seeing how easy it is to pass 1 or 2 thousand through a new pistol to get it to "settle in" I found that to be of great concern. Yeah, 20,000 is a lot, but ...

Does Springfield just assemble the 1911s in the States? I know the lowers are made in Brazil. Do they do any manufacturing, or are they just assembly on 1911s, and distributor on the XDs?

the frames are made in both Brazil and Geneseo, IL. Just luck of the draw i guess. My Loaded happens to be made in Geneseo

Mine too. The issue with the Kimber is the firing pin safety, if you have your hand on the grip safety while reassembling the gun it can be damaged or sheared off. Springfield does not have a FPS so it is a non issue with them. Carefull reassembly will take care of the FPS issue. Also they state in the Kimber liturature that the frames on the light weight frames show no appreciable wear my CDP pro has approx 10,000 rds through it and other than a couple of shiny spots on the frame rails and a slightly dinged feed ramp from the factory mags it is great.

Doesn't the "NM" in front of the serial number tell you if its made in IL?
