Here's my dilemma! I have about $500 to play with in the 1911 category. So here's my questions. I can for $497 out the door, NIB, pick up one of these Charles Daly Field EFS1911's
CharlesDaly.com - Field 1911 .45ACP Pistols I am also considering just getting an SA GI and customizing it the way I want. Or should I just save up a little more money and get a nicer 1911? This will be mainly a range, HD gun. Thanks for your help!

It all depends on what you want to do with the weapon. It's your decision in the end, I know a lot of guys are going to suggest the S/A GI. I'm not familiar with the Charles Daly weapons but have heard on various sites they make a fine weapon.

If you're going to start with a GI and mod it yourself, you're going to spend more money than what it costs to spend on something like the Loaded or similar. However, if you (like me) want a gun that's individual and not like everyone else's, you'll probably get the GI and then mod it as the budget allows.

My vote would be for Springfield as well. Great customer service if you ever need them.

Taurus.
Mine has yet to fail me. Best new gun/features for the money.

I looked at Kimber, STI and Springfield for my 1911. That's over the $500 range though. I know many will recommend the Springfield GI if you want a 'platform' to build from. I don't know much about Charles Daly.
The Taurus would probably be my choice in that range since you get a lot of options not on the Daly or GI. People will trash talk Taurus for being Brazilian etc etc, but all the Springfield GI frames are made in Brazil anyways! Many many 1911 folks are coming around to the Taurus as a quality piece for the price.

check out The M1911 Pistols Organization for more info on the charles daly pistols. I've heard they're pretty good little shooters. I think I read something about Charles Daly and Rock Island Armory 1911s being made by the same company called Armscor.
here's a link for one at bud's Charles Daly Field EFS, 45ACP, 5in Barrel, Blued for Sale at Buds Gun Shop $471.00

I have the RIA Tactical and it was $400 shipped. Nice firearm for the money and you would have a few bucks left for ammunition.
