My husband has a mostly unmodified XD 9MM Tactical and I have an XD 9MM Tactical with a trigger job and a few other goodies. If you wanted to get together and shoot them to see what can be done with the XD, just PM me and we can arrange a time. Granted it is 9MM and not the caliber you want but maybe it might help your decision process.

Thanks for the response fellas.
Wendy - Thanks for the offer, I may take you up on it. Do you shoot the steel matches up in Ames? I think I'm going to check it out for the first time this week to see what it's all about. |

But if I had given myself an $800 budget I would go with SA. At my local gun store today I held a couple of them, though I have never noticed before, and the triggers seemed inconsistent between the same gun. By that I mean one was smooth and the next felt clunky. I have only shot a Para on a few occasions and really don't have an opinion. I wouldn't buy one. One of my shooting buddies swears buy them and carries one as his backup in the glove box pistol. I still would go with a Polymer Pistol for everyday carry. IMO the best auto pistol ever made is the 1911. But man they are big, bulky, long, and uncomfortable for Concealed Carry.

If you show up without a pistol or don't shoot... You will regret it. Just go shoot it. They are a blast! Don't be afraid to ask for help. Shooters are friendly.

Sam runs the Ames matches. We haven't been going lately due to babysitter issues but we were planning on going this week. Bring a gun or they may make you borrow one, lol!
My hubby and I run monthly steel at the Ankeny Ikes in the summer. Last Sunday was the July one and the August one is on the 17th. There is also USPSA in Osceola and IDPA in Ames/Boone. Lots of opportunities to compare guns and the guys are usally very eager to show off their babies...

id go with the SA GI45
ive pushed no telling how many rounds and have had only one failure, and that was due to the ammo. it was some reloads i bought at a gun show (t's ammo) and it just a piece of bad brass... the GI's go for about 500

If you are new to CCW, I saw go with the XD without a doubt. It is striker fired and it doesn't have a thumb safety to deal with when it is needed. You grip the pistol, aim, and shoot, that's it. Now take the extra bones you dug up and save for a dedicated range/competition 1911. For around $500, you can get a Rock Island Armory (RIA) tactical.
Now don't flame me for saying the XD over 1911 for carry reasons. I am not saying that the 1911 is not worthy of CC weapon at all. It is just adds a whole different learning curve to the mix. I don't think it would be the "best" for a new CCL holder. |

Wendy - Yeah I talked to Sam about buying a gun and he told me he ran the steel shoots up there. Nice guy and from what he says it's a good group of people up there. I plan on taking a few things up there and will try not to make a fool out of myself haha.
IndyMatt - No flaming from me. Although I haven't had my CCW for very long, I've been around firearms for long enough the characteristics of the 1911 for carrying doesn't bother me at all. I do understand what your saying as far as the polymer guns though. I still think I'll be working off of a 1911. |

Gotcha! As long as your comfortable with it then enjoy! I have a lot of guns and for some stupid reason I don't have a 1911. It will be my next purchase!
