Talking "Man, it's expensive in here"

So this is the expensive thread page. I have never been here because of the cost of owning a 1911 is a bit much.

nahhhhh.. anything worth saving for, is worth having... I've got a base Kimber Custom II... nothing done to it at ALL... shoots INTO and inch at w/e yardage... I live way out in the stick it's not uncommon for me to tag a tree rat from 50+ yards with it....... I would post pics but squirrel vs. .45.... not pretty

It's not that bad if you can control yourself.

You can get a good working 1911 for no more than $700.

The cost really comes from customization or buying "custom" guns like Springfield Loadeds & above, Kimbers, etc. The "custom" stuff are things like Beavertail safeties, hammers, sights, skeletonized triggers, etc.

You can get into a basic Springfield GI or Mil-spec for under $600. Colts run a bit higher ($600-700).

A Para Ordnance high-cap can be had for under $650 from Budsgunshop.

RIAs are the biggest bang for the buck guns. Lots of MIM parts but owners really love them and they seem to be very reliable & accurate. A Tactical is under $400 which will give you most of the "custom" features.

Taurus is another one (personally I didn't care for mine & their customer service is probably one of the worst 10 in the industry) that you can get for under $600 with all of the "custom" features.

Really, you can get into a good quality 1911 for the same price as an XD. The only downside is that once you start, it's REALLY hard to quit. That's where the real expense comes from.

dave421 hit it on the head.

when i started looking into buying a 1911, i was going to go with a base model, but already having experience with certain firearms dictated what i knew i wanted on my 1911.

if all your wanting is a nice range 1911, a basic GI model will do nicely.

if you plan to carry, or shoot in low light for home defense, you may want to look for something with a dovetailed front/rear sight, so you can get some nice night sights.
i like my colts, but there's plenty of good 1911's to choose from. Springfield's, Kimber, STI, Para, RIA.
i dont know how i feel about Auto Ordanance's base model 1911.. the price is right for under $500, but i'd probably go for a RIA first. and while Taurus is a decent gun, i find i just dont like their fisher price lettering they feel the urge to plaster on their guns, so thats a big turn off for me.

i myself am torn which my next 1911 will be (you'll know that feeling after your first purchase lol) i'm really wanting a nice Springfield but the colt gold cup trophy calls to me when i see them on the shelf

oh, one good thing about RIA.. their warranty service is second to none, they will fix or replace it in a very timely fashion.

cheers
