That seems to make sense because there is no way that I can just push down on the plug. I will try to loosen it when I get off work. I started off trying that but I was afraid I was going to strip the thing. Should it be that hard to loosen? Thanks!

youtube video? GOOD IDEA! I found one for the SA TRP. I think it applies to any SA with the screw out guide rod. Here it is: YouTube - Field stripping the Springfield TRP 1911

Now for my idiot questions: (I am an idiot about 1911s-and other things)

#1. What is an idiot mark?
#2. How does one make an idiot mark?
#3. How does one avoid making an idiot mark?

is there anything wrong with taking the slide off and then removing the spring and short guide piece from the top....as opposed to pushing the plunger down and removing it while the slide is still on the gun?

No, that's fine with a 2 piece guide rod. Just remember to catch the other end of the GR and reciol spring. I'm not a fan of 2 piece GRs, (I've seen more than a few come out the front of the gun while shooting) which is why I suggested a bushing wrench in my first reply.
Jim Clark built me a gun about 17 years ago and he did not use extended guide rods unless the customer insisted. The Gov plug has never let me down.

An idiot mark is the mark that the slide stop makes on the frame or slide as it turns in it's hole.

To prevent this scratch, be careful when installing the slide stop. DO NOT move it up and down trying to get it back in. As your gun breaks in, the detent will get easier to push with just the slide stop. If it is still hard, just use a fine head flat head screwdriver (like one for eyeglass repair) to push the detent and let the slide stop fall into place.

Hope that helps!

When reassembling, when does the 2 piece guide rod need to be screwed back together?

what I do is this...

put the barrel and bushing back in, put the plug in, then put the short guide and spring in and compress it (might be tricky for the first few times), then slide the hex head end through the plug and thread it tight by hand...then put the slide back on and tighten it with the hex wrench.

Is it ok to put the slide stop back in before I do that?

no...the slide stop goes through the barrel link thats attatched to the barrel. you cant put the slide stop back in until you have the gun fully put back together (slide on frame).

i think i understood you right...
