Bucket, No thats a little much. Find a old style oil can put a few 3-4 drops on the interior of each slide rail and a couple more on the barrel hood, work the action a few times then wipe off anything that runs out and call it good.

I like the old style oil cans myself. I have a small one that's maybe 2 1/2" at the bottom, and it's perfect for gun work. As to the oil itself- I currently use Hoppe's Gun Oil, mostly because it's easily available, heavy, and it don't cost an arm and a leg. I have used everything from 3 in 1 to whatever motor oil happened to already be open and sitting on the workbench. All have served well on 32 years worth of 1911's. The guns themselves aren't finicky about oil at all.

We keep them clean and we keep them lubed. As "invssgt" says, the guns themselves aren't finicky....they don't care about marketing or price or labels or if a brand of synthetic motor oil breaks down at 5000 degrees.....The guns only care about reducing friction. Which all oils do (Wesson oil may sound good, but while I'd rather use it to lube a gun than to cook my eggs with axle grease, I'd sort of draw the line at vegetable oil on my guns..LOL). It hasn't been mentioned, probably because it goes without saying (but we always do have our new members with their very first guns they bought yesterday or today) that we have to do our part in keeping the guns clean. All the lube in the world isn't going to make a gun filled with sand function very much more reliably - and it's true that lubricants hold dirt, so keeping a gun lubed is half the deal, keeping it clean is the other half. One without the other is worthless IMO. Peace, D.

The oils on the market is vast and what ever you decide to try/use should be fine for you. Personally I like to use Remingtons "REM OIL" or "Breakfree" to clean the slide and frame. The barrel gets cleaned using MP-Pro7.

BreakFree..... good enough for the USG contracts.... and been using it for over 20 years. I'm sure there is newer, but newer doesn't mean better.

I spend alot of time working on antique fishing reels and it seems no matter what you do, what oil or grease is always hotspot of discussion. Personally, I don't think it matters that much unless you grease too much or are in a saltwater environment. I use Break Free.
