I put approximately 150 rounds of WWB through it this evening and its actually kind of depressing that the best shooting pistol in the house is my wife's.

The only gripe I have is the very bottom of the grip has made my palm a little tender where it digs in.

JB, I actually wouldn't have picked a 1911 for her, but I sent her off to a basic pistol class where they let her try a bunch of pistols, and then we rented a few more, and out of all those she liked the 1911 style in 9mm the most. To be honest, I'm not sure she groks that she'll have to carry it cocked with the safety on. She hasn't decided on how she's going to carry yet either.

I want her to carry, so if this is what she wants and she's willing to practice and all that, it's worth the price to me.

"Groks"? Wow...I haven't heard that expression since college back about 100 years ago...."Stranger in a Strange Land"? Or was it from "Clockwork Orange"? Or Vonnegut?

Anyway, unless the recoil spring is too stiff for her to easily rack the slide, if (or until) she gets used to carrying cocked and locked, she can carry "Israeli Style" (empty chamber)....OR...if the hammer can be cocked with the weak hand thumb (not ideal, but SA revolvers have been cocked that way for well over 100 years) that's another option. I had a .380 "Mustang" size 1911 that I could cock the hammer with my strong hand thumb, so that's another possibility. I sometimes carry a Polish P64 I cock that same way too.

Of course probably the ideal solution if that YOU carry the gun and get her something she's more comfortable with if cocked and locked doesn't work for her. Maybe a double action or DA/SA (although some of them...I had a S&W 469 I could barely manage the first pull with)- or if she likes the 1911 format but not the cocked and locked, isn't the Para LDA a double action "1911"? I've shot one, and it has a very sweet trigger. But no "scary looking" cocked hammer. Lots of very nice DA revolvers out there too....the "Lady's Smith" is a big hit these days.

Good luck and I'm sure y'all will figure something out. If not, let me know if you want to sell the thing!!!! LOL

Peace,
D.

Your EMP is a very nice looking pistol! I would love to have something like that for a carry gun but I like the feel of a full sized grip in my hand. I have held a few of the smaller grip sized guns and it just doesn't feel right to me and I think it would really bother me. Still......it is a sweet looking pistol.

Let me just add that condition 1 (cocked and locked) is the only safe way to carry with a loaded chamber. If you are referring to condition 2 where the hammer is lowered onto a loaded chamber, this is a very bad idea as any strike to the hammer could cause a harsh enough impact with the firing pin to set off the gun. Unlike a DA/SA, you should not carry any other way other than condition 1, unless the chamber is unloaded.

I'm sure you already know this, but just in case you didn't, I don't want to read another prelag thread.

Locked Up

My wife took it to the range tonight. She put about 120 rounds of WWB through it before she managed to lock it up. I really don't know how she did it. I accused her of limp-wristing it, but she said no way.

After a few minutes I got the slide to cycle again, but it took another 15 minutes of futzing with it to get the slide off the frame. It would not go forward.

So anyway, with it field stripped, It didn't look that dirty, and there was oil.

So, I don't know ... after I got it cleaned, very well oiled, and put back to together, it seems fine.

She's taking a pistol class this weekend so I need to get this figured out. Any ideas?

How did it lock up? Was it a Fail To Eject? Slide didn't go back into battery? Fail to load the next round?

And how did you get the slide to cycle again? Sorry for all the questions but maybe the answer to one will help solve what happened.

The slide did not go back into battery. It would go about 3/4 of the way and stop. I got it to go forward by "slingshotting" it 4-5 times. After that, it would cycle normally (dry firing).

When I went to field strip it though, the slide would only go forward about 1/2" past battery on its own.

Going back to Springfield

I took it up to the range tonight and it was not fixed.

It will feed 1-2 magazines ok, then it will fail to go back into battery when you load a new magazine. I tried the slingshot and I tried the slide release lever, it didn't seem to matter.

I field stripped it, wiped it down. Applied some breakfree, and tried it again. Still had problems.

I tried not loading the magazines to full capacity, but it didn't matter.

A couple of times it seemed like it was trying to feed two rounds, because when I would drop the magazine after it failed to go into battery, there would occasionally be a round in the chamber and the round in the magazine would be partially forward. (But this didn't happen everytime.)

I give up. I am calling Springfield in the morning to start the RMA process. I know they will fix it, but its frustrating.

Foo, I hope that your EMP is fixed and returned to you quickly. It seems like a great little gun.

I am seriously considering buying the EMP. There is a new one at a local shop for $929. That is quite a bit of money compared to what my XD9 SC cost. But, I am intrigued with the EMP. It feels so good in my hand and I know it will be easier for me to carry.

I shipped it back, but I haven't heard any diagnosis or solution yet. I will call them on Monday. (They only got it on Friday.)

Mickey, despite the problems, I think it is going to be a good purchase. I will follow up here when I get it back. (Hopefully with a report of how I put 200 rounds through it at the range and it was flawless.)

$929 is pretty good deal. They are hard to find, and when you do they are at least $100 more than that.
